But what stayed with me most wasn’t just the shine – it was the feeling of being in a place where everything seems to be in the middle of becoming something bigger.

A city filled with people chasing different versions of “better.” Somewhere in observing all that motion, I found myself quietly questioning the limits I’ve placed on my own life.

A City That Doesn’t Know How to Be Quiet

Dubai at night doesn’t feel like nighttime the way most cities do. It doesn’t slow down, dim itself, or gently tuck the day away. If anything, it turns up the volume. The lights stretch endlessly across buildings, roads, bridges, and water, and everything seems to glow with purpose. It’s beautiful, yes – but it’s also slightly overwhelming in the way only very alive places can be.

At one point, while just standing near the waterfront and staring at the skyline, my brain quietly asked me,
“Who actually builds things like this?”

Dubai doesn’t whisper its existence. It speaks in bold fonts, glowing colours, and unapologetic scale.
And somewhere between the lights and the silence that followed later, something inside me felt very unfinished.

When You Literally Have to Look Up at Human Imagination

Standing at the foot of the Burj Khalifa does something strange to you. Your neck tilts back. Your sense of proportion gets confused. Your ego, without being asked, quietly takes a seat.

After so much glass, steel, speed, and stimulation, the sand felt like a deep breath I didn’t realise I was holding. The silence out there is different. It doesn’t comfort you in the usual way. It slowly questions you.

People sat quietly on carpets under open skies. No skyscrapers. No LED ambition. Just wind in the distance, footprints in the sand, and stars doing their ancient, patient work.

And standing there, with sand under my shoes and silence everywhere else, one thought settled in with surprising clarity:

Dubai doesn’t erase its past to build its future.
It carries both at the same time.

A place that once survived with very little now dreams without apology. And that quiet contrast, more than the skyline, more than the lights, stayed with me long after I left the desert behind.

The Invisible City Inside the Shiny One

This part doesn’t show up clearly in photographs.

It shows up in a cab conversations that last only ten minutes but feel strangely personal.
It shows up in hotel staff who work long hours with quiet discipline.
It shows up in servers, security guards, shopkeepers, drivers – all carrying pieces of different countries inside the same city.

Dubai quietly runs on reinvention. For many people here, this city is not about luxury. It’s more about starting over with slightly better odds.

And that realisation grounded me in a way I didn’t expect.

Behind every impossible building, there are very possible humans who decided not to give up.

What Dubai Did to My Middle-Class Brain

Well, now I also want to talk about the quiet emotional journey my middle-class brain went on in Dubai, because honestly… it deserves its own support group.

There’s a specific moment that happens in Dubai when your brain quietly gives up trying to compare things with home. Roads feel wider than they need to be. Buildings rise like they skipped a few stages of growth. Even the casual places somehow look… ambitious.

I remember watching cars pass by and realising I’d stopped thinking in numbers altogether. It wasn’t “expensive” anymore; it was simply “not part of my financial vocabulary.” Even the malls felt like small cities itself with air-conditioning.

Nothing felt aggressive or showy. Everything just felt confidently oversized, like the city wasn’t trying to prove anything; it already knew what it was.

The Quiet Cost of Wanting Everything

But here’s the part people don’t always talk about.

Behind the glow, there is loneliness.
Behind the speed, there is emotional distance.
Behind the ambition, there is separation from families, roots, and the life people once knew.

Not everyone in Dubai is chasing joy. Many are chasing responsibility.

This city taught me something simple and heavy at the same time:

Wanting more always costs something.
And sometimes, that cost is emotional.

And yet… people still come.
People still build.
People still take the risk.

Because for many, the alternative feels smaller than the risk itself.

I didn’t return with luxury habits. I didn’t return richer. And I definitely didn’t return with a new lifestyle overnight.

What I brought back instead was inconvenient:

A discomfort with small thinking.
A louder inner voice.
A refusal to hide behind “practicality” as a polite name for fear.

Dubai didn’t upgrade my life.

It quietly upgraded my relationship with possibility.

If humans can build something like this from sand, I have no right to underestimate what I can build from doubt.

This past week, I had one of those incredible “firsts” that completely shifted my perspective. I went paragliding! And not just anywhere – it was from the Bir Billing in Himachal Pradesh, India, which they claim is the world’s second-highest paragliding point. No big deal, right? Except…well, I’ve never paraglider before in my life.

First, they took me to the mountain peak around some 8100 feet above. And then as I stood there, just before the takeoff, my instructor told me to run towards the edge of the mountain with every force I had. I was seeing the deepest cliff in front of me I’ve ever seen with my eyes. There were only mountains and alpine trees all around me.

My whole body was surrounded by a lot of ‘What If’ scenarios. Again & again I was asking myself – “Am I really ready for this?”

But the second I launched myself off that cliff, it all melted away. All that was left was the appreciation and realization of how big & precious the world really is.

Soaring above the Himalayas, the snow-capped peaks beside me, it was like the world opened up in a way I never imagined. I see the horizons and the universe much closer to me. Everything suddenly felt simpler, smaller worries just faded away. It was like I had unlocked a whole new dimension of joy, the kind that can only be found in those first-time experiences.

After I returned home, it got me thinking –

Why do first-time experiences matter so much?

Well, this isn’t just about paragliding, though that was pretty epic. First-time experiences matter because they push us outside our comfort zones. They remind us that fear can be a big, fat liar, and sometimes you gotta grab life by the horns and just go for it.

Remember that first hike you took, even though your legs screamed? That feeling of accomplishment after reaching the peak? The first time you get that 1 like on your blog? That’s the magic of firsts. Because the funny thing is – the most incredible things in life happen just beyond the edge of what we think we’re capable of.

To be honest, I remember the fear when I hiked for the first time in the mountains. I still sometimes hesitate for a second before tackling a new mountain. But you know what? If the opportunity presents itself, I’ll even go for higher mountains, higher paragliding points, higher skydiving, higher bungee jumping, and eventually higher me.

And while I might not have all the time in the world, every first-time experience is a chance to grow, to learn, and to feel truly alive. I wanna feel this world, this universe.

Next time you get that chance to try something new, something a little scary, take a deep breath and just go for it. You might surprise yourself with what you can achieve, and how much bigger the world feels when you see it from a new perspective.

After all, life’s a journey, and the best journeys are filled with amazing first times!

This post is about our 2 days journey to India’s eternal city – Varanasi. Our trip to rediscover who we are and our place in the universe. From chaos to calm, where timeless traditions meet modern aspirations, we explored Varanas’s spiritual essence.

So, sit back and relax as we take you on a magical journey that’ll make you forget the outside world to be at peace.

Nestled on the banks of the sacred river Ganges, Varanasi is a city that breathes spirituality and ancient wisdom. With a history spanning over 3,000 years, this vibrant and colourful city is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world.

Varanasi, also known as Kashi or Banaras, is a mesmerizing tapestry of culture, religion, and tradition that captivates the hearts and minds of visitors from around the globe.

My friend and I embarked on a journey from Delhi to Varanasi, seeking to immerse ourselves in the essence of spirituality and its timeless aura. The experience was nothing short of extraordinary, and I feel compelled to share it with all of you, dear readers. Varanasi, the oldest city, exuded a spiritual charm like no other, serving as a sacred hub of purity and ancient wisdom.

Varanasi has an illustrious past, steeped in mythology and revered by Hindus as the holiest city in India. According to Hindu belief, Lord Shiva, the deity of destruction and creation, chose Varanasi as his abode, making it a significant pilgrimage site for Hindus.

The city has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, the birth of religious movements, and the passage of great scholars and philosophers.

In the fast-paced environment of a bustling metropolis like Delhi, finding moments of peace and relaxation can be a challenge. Therefore, for quite some time, we had been contemplating the idea of seeking a destination where we could experience both inner tranquillity and the enchanting essence of ancient times.

After thorough research and exploration of various options, we discovered that the city of Varanasi emerged as the perfect place to fulfil our aspirations. It promised to offer everything we sought, all in one enchanting location.

Varanasi offers various transportation options for travellers, including flights, buses, trains, and the possibility of a road trip. Considering our desire for a memorable journey, we opted to travel by train, as the Indian Railway has its own charm.

The first day in Varanasi began with a refreshing morning, greeted by a stunning sunrise and blessed with enchanting weather. Embracing the moment, we hopped on a Rickshaw and made our way to Kashi Ghat, eagerly anticipating the golden rays dancing upon the sacred waters of the Ganga River.

The beauty of the surroundings was so captivating that all worries faded away, and we immersed ourselves in the serenity, savouring every moment of tranquillity.

Without any delay, we eagerly immerse ourselves in the holy waters of the Ganga, seeking purification through the sacred Snaan (Bath). Our fortunes smile upon us as a downpour blesses our journey, enhancing the joy of our experience.

Just as we had heard about Kashi, our experience there mirrored those stories. The sacred ambience enveloped us, surrounded by fervent Lord Shiva devotees chanting “Har Har Mahadev” everywhere, filling the atmosphere with divine energy.

Exploring Ancient Ghats & Temples

After a divine bath and savouring the breathtaking sunrise, we set out to plan our day’s itinerary. Prior to that, we secured a rented room near the revered Kashi Viswanath Temple. Our first destination was the Ghats, followed by some shopping for our family.

Later that day, we were accompanied by rain too.

Starting with Ghats exploration, we began at Dashaswamedh Ghat, a site steeped in Hindu mythology, as it is believed that Lord Brahma created it to welcome Lord Shiva.

This particular Ghat serves as the primary venue for the magnificent Ganga Arti, both in the morning and evening. Subsequently, we embarked on visits to other notable Ghats such as Assi Ghat, Raja Harishchandra Ghat, and Manikarnika Ghat, each with its unique significance and charm.

The banks of the Ganga River are adorned with around 84 Ghats. Among them, Manikarnika Ghat stands out as a place renowned for hosting the grandest cremation ceremonies. Interestingly, when witnessing these solemn rituals at Manikarnika Ghat, a unique sense of fearlessness enveloped me.

My mind transcended into a state of serenity, realizing that this is an undeniable truth inherent in our existence. It serves as a reminder that all of us shall one day confront mortality, leaving behind nothing but a few cherished family members.

After exploring the various Ghats, we excitedly set out to discover the cuisine of Varanasi. We kicked off our journey with refreshing Buttermilk (Lassi) served in traditional Kulladh, a clay-made glass.

After a variety of mouthwatering delicacies, we indulged in some shopping, delighting in the purchase of exquisite Banarasi Sarees, kurtas, and more.

Evening’s Ganga Arti Enchantments

The anticipation of the evening’s Ganga Arti had us eagerly awaiting the moment. To secure a good spot, we arrived an hour early, ensuring we wouldn’t miss a thing. As the sun dipped below the horizon and the enchanting Ganga Arti started, indescribable energy and a positive aura enveloped the atmosphere.

In that magical moment, all our worries and troubles seemed to vanish, as we immersed ourselves completely in the captivating experience.

At the end of our eventful day’s journey, we made a decision to visit a temple known as the abode of the Inspector of Kashi, Lord Bhairav. This divine figure holds the title of “Inspector of Kashi” because the local firmly believes that he tirelessly safeguards the city from all adversities.

Our amazement knew no bounds when we discovered that even in a police station in Varanasi, a reserved seat is kept for Lord Kal Bhairav. His presence and protection were evident throughout the city, leaving us in awe of the deep-rooted faith.

The following morning, during the serene hours, we set off to visit the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Owing to the temple’s strict rules, mobile phones and electronic devices were prohibited, allowing us to be fully present in the divine ambience.

Later, our journey led us to the historical site of Sarnath, where Gautama Buddha delivered his inaugural sermon.

It was an exhilarating adventure, as we explored both the divine energy of the temple and the profound historical significance of Sarnath. This remarkable experience impacted us, influencing our perspectives and reshaping our way of life.

Recently I returned to my love of photography, an art form that I embraced long ago consisting of 35mm cameras, film, and darkrooms. I assumed the new high-tech digital cameras would be simple, not having to mess with film or development.

Well, we all know what happens when we assume anything. Suffice it to say, it’s an entirely different and somewhat complicated world.

I also enjoy hiking because Lord knows I need the exercise, but most of all I love being outside in our beautifully created world. Some of the most interesting places and things are beyond the road most traveled. So, putting on some hiking shoes and getting “out there” is the only way to see them up close.

Hiking and photography seem to go hand in hand. Taking a camera along just “feels right.” Wouldn’t you want to take a photo of that squirrel sitting on a limb dropping nutshells on your head and chattering as you walk underneath?

Let me tell you, I was elated that my camera was with me as a herd of elk walked into the field right in front of me just this past Saturday.

(PS- All these photos are taken by me)

When you look upon towering cliffs, relaxing bubbling creeks, or breathtaking scenic vistas you must have that camera and capture the moment. The images will last a lifetime and every time you look at them you will be taken right back to that exact moment.

You get to re-experience, not only what you saw, but the sounds, the fragrances, and how it all made you feel.

I am truly blessed to be living in the Ozarks where towering cliffs abound, and amazing stone sculptures have been carved into them by wind and rain. Countless species of trees and foliage burst into flaming colors during the Fall. Spring and Summer will reveal more shades of green than you thought possible.

People travel hundreds, even thousands of miles just to glimpse the full spectrum of natural color. Fantastic waterfalls, mysterious and exciting caves for exploring await. There are beautiful lakes, streams, and rivers loaded with 200 species of fish. You can see and photograph 70 different breeds of mammals and nearly 400 types of birds. But you can’t experience any of it working all the time or sitting at home.

We all know there is much strife and turmoil in the world today. Divisiveness, fear, and even hate can surround and consume us if we let it.

You will never hear better advice than this: Get out from in front of the TV. Stop playing video games or watching the news. Get off the internet and use that life-controlling phone as a camera (it won’t get reception out there anyway) and come back to real life!

If you do these things and enter nature’s wonderland, all that aforementioned turmoil and the anxiety that goes with it will disappear.
