And thanks for mentioning the first African-American female pilot, someone I’ve never heard of, because the only early female pilot anyone talks about is Amelia Earhart, of course. Bessie Coleman was a contemporary of Amelia but had to leave the country in order to not be held back from her ambitions, but I never heard a whisper of her name when I was in school.
Same with Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first Black nurse in the U.S. We only hear about Florence Nightingale, and in fact, newspapers exaggerated her importance during the Crimean War while, similarly, we never heard about Mary Seacole, a British-Jamaican nurse who actually contributed a lot more during that war.
Sigh. Oh, well. Didn’t mean to deviate into racial inequality, but the Black pilot was the catalyst! Never heard of her! Thanks again for the post.
