On the morning of August 10, 2026, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, the strongest to hit the country in a decade. At least 181 people were killed and more than 2,595 injured. More than 1,500 homes were damaged and at least 60 buildings collapsed. More than 200 health facilities were affected, creating a dual crisis: healthcare needs surging at the very moment the capacity to provide care collapsed.

Colombia went quiet with grief.

And then a six-year-old girl walked up to someone, held out her piggy bank with both hands, and changed the temperature of the whole story.

What She Had Been Saving For

She had been putting money away for a bicycle. Coin by coin, the way children do – slowly, patiently, with a specific thing in mind and the quiet pride of saving toward it.

Then she saw the news.

After seeing the coverage of the earthquake, she gave away the money she had saved up for the bicycle without hesitation. She held the piggy bank out, shyly, according to those who filmed it and handed over everything inside it.

No negotiation. No “I’ll give half.” Just the whole thing, offered in two small hands, to people she had never met and would never meet, in a part of her country she had only seen on a screen.

The video spread across TikTok and beyond. The warm gesture is reportedly bringing great comfort to the disaster-stricken area plunged in despair.

What Was Happening Around Her

The little girl’s gesture didn’t exist in isolation. It was one thread in a much larger fabric of kindness that began weaving itself together almost the moment the ground stopped shaking.

Shakira, who was born in Colombia, pledged $1.25 million to rebuild schools damaged by the earthquake – $500,000 of it from herself and Live Nation, with additional funding from the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund and the Development Bank of Latin America. Her foundation, Fundación Pies Descalzos, will lead the rebuilding effort. She said she would personally focus on rebuilding the damaged Technological University of Chocó.

“Every day that children don’t go to school is a day we put their future on hold,” she told reporters during a visit to Quibdó.

A six-month-old baby was rescued from the rubble – alive, pulled from the collapsed debris by hands that refused to stop searching.

And somewhere in all of that, between the collapsed buildings and the rescue teams and the international aid and the celebrity pledges, a child in pigtails stood quietly with a piggy bank and said: this is what I have, and I want you to have it.

The Bicycle

There’s a detail in this story that deserves its own moment.

She was saving for a bicycle. Not for something abstract or indefinite – a bicycle. A specific thing, a child’s dream, the kind of goal that has a shape and a colour and probably a particular model she’d been thinking about. That’s what was in the piggy bank.

She gave it away anyway.

There’s a kind of generosity that gives from surplus, the amount left over after everything important has been accounted for. And then there’s the kind that gives from the middle of wanting something yourself. The little girl with the piggy bank didn’t give from surplus. She gave from her bicycle.

That’s the harder gift. That’s the one that stays with you.

The Larger Thing

Colombia is still recovering. Prior to the earthquake, over 10 million people in Colombia were already projected to need humanitarian assistance. The road back is long and the needs are enormous. One piggy bank doesn’t rebuild a city.

But that was never the point.

The point – the reason this video spread to millions of people and the reason it belongs in the Kindness Report is what it says about the instinct to help. Not the capacity to help, not the resources, not the scale. Just the instinct. The six-year-old didn’t calculate whether her contribution would make a measurable difference. She saw people who needed something and she gave them the most valuable thing she had.

Adults spend a lot of time talking themselves out of that instinct. Cost-benefit analyses, the drop-in-the-ocean feeling, the sense that small gestures don’t count.

A six-year-old held out a piggy bank and proved that wrong.
