Poetry—it’s more than just words on a page. It’s an emotion, a thought, a wave of feelings that sweeps through the soul. I may not write poetry myself (apart from the 2-3 attempts here and there), but I’ve always found solace and inspiration in the verses created by others. Every poet I’ve come across, whether in person, online, or through books, has added something special to this world—a spark, a voice, a story that resonates.

I want to dedicate this blog to all the poets out there, past and present—those whose words breathe life into our world and those who continue to keep the flame of poetry alive. This one is for you!

A Brief History of Poetry

Poetry has been with us for thousands of years, shaping civilizations and influencing cultures. From the epic poems of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey to Shakespeare’s sonnets, poetry has always had the power to immortalize thoughts, ideas, and emotions.

I was reading somewhere that the earliest known written poetry dates back to the Sumerians, around 2000 BCE. That’s mind-boggling. They used cuneiform to record their epic tales. Over the centuries, poetry has evolved, from the structured, meter-based verses of classic poets to the free-verse poems of today. It’s been used to capture historical events, personal journeys, and deep philosophical thoughts.

Why Is Poetry Important to Our World Today?

Poetry is a way to capture the essence of human experience. It touches on our emotions, our dreams, our struggles, and our triumphs. Today, with everything going on around the world, poetry serves as both a reflection and a healing tool. It allows us to express what often cannot be said in plain language.

I do mean, that a few lines of poetry can be more powerful than a thousand words of prose.

In the words of Robin Williams’ character in Dead Poets Society,

“Poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.”

The movie, so close to my heart, beautifully explores the power of words and how they can help us see the world with a fresh perspective. Poetry has the power to inspire and even to challenge the norms of society. It encourages us to honour individuality, to appreciate beauty in the smallest moments, and to fight for what is right.

The Healing Power of Poetry

Reading poetry can be a form of therapy. Whether it’s a poem about love, loss, nature, or personal reflection, poetry helps us process emotions and find clarity. It’s an outlet for our deepest thoughts and a source of comfort when we need it most. So many times, I’ve picked up a poetry book or read something from a fellow blogger and felt that instant connection.

Poetry doesn’t just entertain—it heals, it teaches, and it connects us to a larger human experience. It’s timeless, and it reminds us that we’re not alone in what we feel. Now, as I’m talking about the power of poetry, I do want to mention some of the legendary and timeless poetry.
