But what good did all those wars accomplish? Well, of course in our first war, we won our independence from The King’s rule, our freedom, and the right to govern ourselves. Other wars were fought to keep our freedom from those who wanted to take it away.

We fought for and with our allies when they were threatened and when we were needed. We fought for a variety of reasons in other wars, some good reasons, some bad reasons. Wars are ongoing today as we continue to add to the stats.

What has happened to America along the way? In my opinion, America has hardened its heart, and therefore become severely divided. We have drawn lines in the sand, divided into factions and we all scream out, “nobody, but nobody is right, and everyone is wrong until they agree with me and my faction.”

It is Just Politics as Usual

Some say it is just politics and it has always been this way. In case you do not know, in American government we have the left and the right, Democrats and Republicans. They have always argued, never agree, and never will. Many say this is the problem.

No, that is not the problem at all! America used to be united, despite our differences. Although we fought a 4-year civil war, afterwards we re-united. We were again “The United States.” We might have still disagreed on how to solve a problem but we “united” to resolve it.

If you have been paying any attention to our country lately, you know we are anything but a “United States.” There are so many issues dividing us, it seems hopeless that we could ever unite again. Our enemies need not wage war against us, threaten us, kill us, or destroy our independence and freedom. Hell, we are killing each other and destroying America and freedom by ourselves! (Please excuse my French).

There was a song in the 60’s that foretold a bit of what has been occurring in America called “For What it’s Worth?” By: Buffalo Springfield.

Here is one line from that song: “There’s battle lines being drawn. Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong.” (You can hear the song here) Youtube Video.

You Might Ask, What’s The Answer Smarty Pants?

Well, the answer is not religion. I am a Christian so it’s extremely hard for me to say that. But for the sake of this article let us try a different approach, an approach that would actually work for everyone. It is worth a try.

If I were to say, the answer IS religion, the immediate response would be, which religion? Or, I do not believe in religion, or a multitude of negative responses. So, you can see the discussion very quickly divides us. More wars have been fought in the name of religion than anything else. We have probably won few of those wars and if we did, it did not seem to help based on where we are today.

Again, Mr. “Know it All” What’s The Answer?

I have an answer, I am going to give you my answer, but you will not like the answer. The answer to all America’s problems is simply one word, “discipline.”

It is discipline that determines everything in my life, your life, and the lives of people all over the world. I must believe that unless there is a medical or mental problem involved, that everyone really knows right from wrong. But we become one-sided or even radical when we have no “discipline.” Without discipline we lose our common sense.

We all know the basic, common, humanitarian tenets that, if followed would unite America again. But although most Americans know how they “should act” and what they “should do.” The problem is that we do not have the discipline to do them.

The reason Religion is not the answer to America’s division, hatred, and constant warring is we have allowed different Religions and our many differences to divide us. We are stubborn and hardheaded, we accept no belief system but our own. We would not be caught dead reading about another person’s beliefs if they did not match ours.

Understanding and being tolerant of other ways does not mean I have to sacrifice my own beliefs.

We All Want the Same Thing

All peoples around the world do share common beliefs about truths, rules, commandments, or precepts. Whatever names they are given, they show us how to be decent human beings and how to get along together. This list below proves that the answer to our continuous wars and division cannot simply be religion. It shows that having the discipline to live our lives by our common ground is the answer.

This is a woefully simplified list of the precepts or rules concerning most people on our little planet. There is so, so much more than this brief list that we all have in common. I did the best I could in a short space.

We just need the discipline to study and practice our similarities rather than study and fight about our differences. I was quite surprised when I studied other countries and other people. I was also reminded that the United States was created from all races, beliefs, and many types of people. They are our brothers, sisters, and neighbors.

We know there are extremists in our world because they do not discipline their thinking, but below are things and reasons we can come together.

A Sample of What I Found

Christianity (31.1%) Love God and Love your brother as yourself.

Islam (24.9%) Love God and be good to others.

Irreligion (15.6%) Generally speaking, have the same precepts as others, but no Deity.

Hinduism (15.2%) Buddhism and Hinduism agree on many things: karma, dharma, moksha and reincarnation.

Buddhism (6.6%) To do no evil. To do good. To save all beings.

There is a common theme here: To love and be good to all other beings.

Varanasi, also known as Kashi or Banaras, is a mesmerizing tapestry of culture, religion, and tradition that captivates the hearts and minds of visitors from around the globe.

My friend and I embarked on a journey from Delhi to Varanasi, seeking to immerse ourselves in the essence of spirituality and its timeless aura. The experience was nothing short of extraordinary, and I feel compelled to share it with all of you, dear readers. Varanasi, the oldest city, exuded a spiritual charm like no other, serving as a sacred hub of purity and ancient wisdom.

Varanasi has an illustrious past, steeped in mythology and revered by Hindus as the holiest city in India. According to Hindu belief, Lord Shiva, the deity of destruction and creation, chose Varanasi as his abode, making it a significant pilgrimage site for Hindus.

The city has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, the birth of religious movements, and the passage of great scholars and philosophers.

Our Journey to Varanasi Begins

In the fast-paced environment of a bustling metropolis like Delhi, finding moments of peace and relaxation can be a challenge. Therefore, for quite some time, we had been contemplating the idea of seeking a destination where we could experience both inner tranquillity and the enchanting essence of ancient times.

After thorough research and exploration of various options, we discovered that the city of Varanasi emerged as the perfect place to fulfil our aspirations. It promised to offer everything we sought, all in one enchanting location.

Varanasi offers various transportation options for travellers, including flights, buses, trains, and the possibility of a road trip. Considering our desire for a memorable journey, we opted to travel by train, as the Indian Railway has its own charm.

The anticipation built as we boarded the train in Delhi, knowing that the scenic route would enhance our experience. After a lengthy yet captivating journey, we finally arrived at our destination, Varanasi, ready to embark on a soul-enriching adventure.

The first day in Varanasi began with a refreshing morning, greeted by a stunning sunrise and blessed with enchanting weather. Embracing the moment, we hopped on a Rickshaw and made our way to Kashi Ghat, eagerly anticipating the golden rays dancing upon the sacred waters of the Ganga River.

The beauty of the surroundings was so captivating that all worries faded away, and we immersed ourselves in the serenity, savouring every moment of tranquillity.

Without any delay, we eagerly immerse ourselves in the holy waters of the Ganga, seeking purification through the sacred Snaan (Bath). Our fortunes smile upon us as a downpour blesses our journey, enhancing the joy of our experience.

Just as we had heard about Kashi, our experience there mirrored those stories. The sacred ambience enveloped us, surrounded by fervent Lord Shiva devotees chanting “Har Har Mahadev” everywhere, filling the atmosphere with divine energy.

Exploring Ancient Ghats & Temples

After a divine bath and savouring the breathtaking sunrise, we set out to plan our day’s itinerary. Prior to that, we secured a rented room near the revered Kashi Viswanath Temple. Our first destination was the Ghats, followed by some shopping for our family.

Later that day, we were accompanied by rain too.

Starting with Ghats exploration, we began at Dashaswamedh Ghat, a site steeped in Hindu mythology, as it is believed that Lord Brahma created it to welcome Lord Shiva.

This particular Ghat serves as the primary venue for the magnificent Ganga Arti, both in the morning and evening. Subsequently, we embarked on visits to other notable Ghats such as Assi Ghat, Raja Harishchandra Ghat, and Manikarnika Ghat, each with its unique significance and charm.

The banks of the Ganga River are adorned with around 84 Ghats. Among them, Manikarnika Ghat stands out as a place renowned for hosting the grandest cremation ceremonies. Interestingly, when witnessing these solemn rituals at Manikarnika Ghat, a unique sense of fearlessness enveloped me.

My mind transcended into a state of serenity, realizing that this is an undeniable truth inherent in our existence. It serves as a reminder that all of us shall one day confront mortality, leaving behind nothing but a few cherished family members.

After exploring the various Ghats, we excitedly set out to discover the cuisine of Varanasi. We kicked off our journey with refreshing Buttermilk (Lassi) served in traditional Kulladh, a clay-made glass.

After a variety of mouthwatering delicacies, we indulged in some shopping, delighting in the purchase of exquisite Banarasi Sarees, kurtas, and more.

Evening’s Ganga Arti Enchantments

The anticipation of the evening’s Ganga Arti had us eagerly awaiting the moment. To secure a good spot, we arrived an hour early, ensuring we wouldn’t miss a thing. As the sun dipped below the horizon and the enchanting Ganga Arti started, indescribable energy and a positive aura enveloped the atmosphere.

In that magical moment, all our worries and troubles seemed to vanish, as we immersed ourselves completely in the captivating experience.

At the end of our eventful day’s journey, we made a decision to visit a temple known as the abode of the Inspector of Kashi, Lord Bhairav. This divine figure holds the title of “Inspector of Kashi” because the local firmly believes that he tirelessly safeguards the city from all adversities.

Our amazement knew no bounds when we discovered that even in a police station in Varanasi, a reserved seat is kept for Lord Kal Bhairav. His presence and protection were evident throughout the city, leaving us in awe of the deep-rooted faith.

The following morning, during the serene hours, we set off to visit the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Owing to the temple’s strict rules, mobile phones and electronic devices were prohibited, allowing us to be fully present in the divine ambience.

Later, our journey led us to the historical site of Sarnath, where Gautama Buddha delivered his inaugural sermon.

It was an exhilarating adventure, as we explored both the divine energy of the temple and the profound historical significance of Sarnath. This remarkable experience impacted us, influencing our perspectives and reshaping our way of life.

As we are exploring Varanasi, you should also know these lesser-known facts about this ancient city.

Lesser-known Facts about Varanasi

We know that Varanasi is the oldest city and is well known for its sacred vibes. It is considered one of the holiest places for Hindus and attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists each year. While many facts about Varanasi are well-known, here are some facts about this ancient city.

• Famous Sanskrit University: Varanasi is home to the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), which was founded in 1916 and is one of the largest residential universities in Asia. It has been instrumental in promoting education and preserving Indian culture.
• Miniature Painting Hub: During the Mughal era, Varanasi was a significant centre for miniature paintings, featuring unique styles and techniques. The artists produced exquisite artwork depicting mythological stories, religious themes, and the daily lives of the people.

How do you handle the times in your life when circumstances- natural or deliberate – make you feel as if you are in pieces?

Like a burst balloon….. what once was is no more.

I am a Christian and my faith is not based on religion as some define religion.

I Have chosen to follow THE WAY and teaching of a PERSON.

He is a ‘living’ reality in my life and I have accepted He is the Saviour of my soul. I have a purpose and a destination. But while I live His Plan is for me to LOVE others. To care in whatever way I am able.

I have been through many circumstances – deaths of friends, family and key support in my life. Health issues. I have known betrayal of trust. Fire and flood. I have experienced financial struggles and have also known the overwhelming joy of new life often after being devastated by natural disasters.

The question at the beginning of this article asked of me and I wrote about on my Blog Passionate Creative Christian this response.

Have you ever felt like this in your personal life? Those times when a dream is destroyed, a health issue arises or someone significant in your life dies, leaves or betrays you. It can seem like everything has just ‘blown up’ in your face. I have certainly known times like this.

One truth that ever sustains me today is the reminder of our Saviour’s Promise….. I will NEVER leave you or forsake you. Hebs 13:5. Matt. 28:20 Surely, I am with you until the end of the age.

I have discovered too that even if the strips of your burst balloon are scattered far and wide if you surrender the bits to him ….. fragments of your life, as Divine creator God can make something beautiful out of these pieces.

Bringing BEAUTY from Ashes is his speciality. Give all your sorrows, pain, and disappointments into His nail-scarred Hands and WORSHIP.

God is and for eternity remains the God of the Impossible.

Thus was my response as an answer that Believers like me would understand but I would like to hear responses from writers and folks who are follows their beliefs and faiths.

I had lofty goals when I began writing and publishing my blog three years ago. I would tell as many people as possible about how I confessed my sins to the Lord. I wrote articles about my sins to friends and people I didn’t even know. I told stories about my journey as a Christian.

Nothing too fancy I don’t think. Just everyday issues, that as a Christian, I faced in the workplace or just generally out in the world. I did these things as a witness, to testify to how my life had changed for the better. The lofty goal part was to bring more people to God. Lord knows our world needs better and less evil, which translates to more God and less Satan.

Instead, I found that social media is a brutal place for the faithful.

There is some clarification needed when I talk about social media. Many of us do profess our faith from our personal accounts on social media. This is good because it shows our friends and relatives that we are Christians (or your faith & religion).

We all have our tight little circles, and we comment and “like” each other’s posts. It’s all good, mostly safe, and it’s very rare to hear a disparaging word. It’s when we move outside the little box that we see and hear from the enormous social media community, Known as: “the world”.

Some social media sites allow you to “promote” an article or your post. For very few bucks you can reach thousands of people. This was wonderful news to me because that was my goal. I would witness as many people as possible. This would put my message out “in the world” But I was a bit naive.

First of all, if anything about faith is mentioned in the title, the article will only be read by people of faith. Everyone else will either scroll right on by or based on the title, make derogatory, sometimes filthy remarks about me, Christians or any other religions, or even worse about God.

It’s no wonder that many Christians make little, timid, or no attempt to reach out or talk about their faith in “the world”.

The Lord has led me to post around 80 faith-based articles so far. My previous article was written simply about preparing for hard times. I also read it in church as a devotional. However, since it had the word “Christians” in the title, and it was posted “in the world” the article attracted the most hatred towards God I have seen to date. I try to have a conversation with all those who comment, even the hateful, but some are just too vile. (And vile is putting it mildly).

I talk about it because this is part of my journey, and it is most likely the same journey of anyone who professes to be a Christian and professes it out in “the world”. Jesus told his disciples that he was sending them as lambs into a pack of wolves.

I’ll admit it, that’s about what it feels like right now at the moment of this writing. It’s one of those times when I wonder, “why the heck am I putting myself through this?” And it makes me understand why Christians sometimes “hide out” in church.

Why Am I Writing About This?

One of the more civil commenters on the article about being prepared, “Bob” asked me:

“Am I wrong, but it seems to me that evangelical Christians don’t care that we are destroying our planet?“

He continued: “it doesn’t matter to you people because you believe heaven is coming to those who (believe) and the health of this world doesn’t matter to you.”

How would you respond to that? Well, I thought about this a minute (actually probably 3 or 4 minutes) which is a lifetime on the internet before responding to Bob this way:

I think there is some truth to what you are saying, “Bob”. I don’t know if I’ll say this right, but I get the feeling there are some Christians that are tired and seem to have given up and believe the world (man) is far too gone to worry about anymore. Christians also feel under attack like never before and are just ready to move on. Christians are certainly not perfect and they still make mistakes and sin. I disagree wholeheartedly with that way of thinking because God named the man as the caretaker of the earth, animals, and all his creations.

(Now that’s not worded exactly as I would have liked, but it’s the best I could do at the moment.)

You see, Bob unknowingly struck a nerve with me. Although he was talking about the environment, his last statement: “like it doesn’t matter because Heaven is coming to those who (believe) and the health of the world doesn’t matter” Well honestly, that was pretty much how I was feeling.

I think I was about ready to “hide out in church”. I was sick of hearing criticism and verbal abuse. It would be glorious to just attend church every time the doors opened, read and study the Bible, listen to sermons, leave the hateful sinful world outside, and just enjoy the rest of my life. This would be my “mike drop” moment.

But Then I think Of The Apostle Paul

Why did I suddenly think of Paul out of the clear blue? At the times when I am disgusted, tired, and want to give up, The Holy Spirit shows up.

Paul wrote most of the New Testament with words breathed by God. From these words was written that he worked harder and served more prison sentences than anyone else for his faith.

He was beaten times without a number. He faced death again and again. He was beaten the regulation thirty-nine stripes by the Jews five times. He was beaten with rods three times, and stoned once. During his evangelical travels, he was shipwrecked three times and spent twenty-four hours in the open sea.

He was in constant danger from rivers, floods, bandits, pagans, and even his own countrymen. Paul experienced: exhaustion, pain, long vigils, hunger, and thirst, starvation, cold, and lack of clothing.”

He endured all these things defending his faith and spreading the gospel.

So, when I am called a fool for believing a mythical book such as the Bible, I need to remember it’s just words attacking me, not 37 lashes. When I am being told Christians are liars, and hypocrites, and should all be eradicated, I am not actually being beaten with wooden rods, it’s just words.

And even when a man who professed to be God wrote to me and threatened me, at least he didn’t mention any stones would be involved.

I’m not ready to live in a small box and hide away inside the church just yet.

I guess some could say “that Is my belief; I believe only in myself and making money.” Do not get me wrong, money can do many good things. I am speaking about believing in money only for personal gain, the love of money and the love of oneself.

It Is Simply an Offer

I believe our life here on earth is only the beginning. Most faiths believe this in one way or another. I believe in God (who is called many names) and believing is certainly a choice. Nobody can force faith on anyone. Faith in any belief system (religion) is an offer. You must choose to believe.

If you do not believe in any sort of afterlife, then it would seem (to me) that you will want to get as much as you can right now. I assume this because I once belonged to the: “This is all there is” group and let me tell you, I wanted it all right now and would do almost anything to get it.

There Is Good in All

But I became a new person. I changed and now I view money not only to support myself but more importantly for it to be used as a tool to help others. My faith calls it being “born again.”

I have read and studied about many other faiths. There are radical people in every aspect of life or faith including mine. However, I have seen that the truly faithful in all beliefs live their faith and practice their faith to do good things. But we build these fences or walls between us.

Instead of all working together for the betterment of humanity, we have these walls and written on these walls are things like,” believe exactly as I do, or you are wrong” or “stay on your side of the wall don’t dare come over here.” And this is putting the wall writings mildly.

Find Common Ground

I was as guilty as anyone, but I am trying to find common ground with other faiths. I am a Christian, but my brother-in-law is a “Jehovah’s Witness.” I work with a young man who is Muslim and another who is Jewish.

I have fantastic conversations with people who are of other faiths. Sure, there are differences in our beliefs, but at the core, most believe there is another life beyond this one. We believe there will be a time when there will be only peace and love for one another. We may just disagree on how or when that happens.

This article will bring out some who will tell me I am wrong and not to cross over their fence and they will “call me out for false teaching.” To quote an old song I say they are “just another brick in the wall.”

Many, or maybe even most religions teach that their belief system is the only one. It seems that most people are born into a certain religion, but I believe it is very beneficial to study other beliefs if you are
really serious about your faith.

I have met some of the same passionate, loving, caring, giving, and faithful people who do not share the same exact faith with me.

Being a simple Christian, I am not associated with any denomination, and will never judge anyone. I love everyone, even my enemies.

I have not written anything in a couple of months because of a serious back injury, surgery, and then medications. Having dealt with back injuries, broken bones, surgeries, and many other injuries before. I can deal with pain, but I did not know the kind of pain I experienced with this back injury existed.

As I lay there screaming at my heavenly Father, asking Him why He would allow me to suffer this way. Asking had not been faithful and steadfastly believed in Him? Had I not been doing my best to serve and be a good example of a Christian?

Then I asked Him for permission to take my own life. Knowing that his answer was no, I begged and pleaded with him to take me, allow me to die, and bring me home. I could not bear this pain any longer.

Does Your God Speak?

Some people say God speaks to them. If they say this out loud in society, they are likely to be laughed at or ridiculed. Maybe that reaction is understandable as unbelievers would probably imagine a thundering voice speaking from the clouds or a ghostly apparition appearing and speaking to them. I used to think that very same thing myself. (I would love to have such a powerful mystical experience)

I am invisible compared to the mystical universe

How He Speaks to Me

Think of this what you will, He spoke to me. As I lay there unable to move, screaming at God, praying for death, this thought and these words came to me “If you will be quiet I want to tell you that I’ve got this.”

Never in a million years would I have thought those words, especially at that time. As the ambulance arrived, I was thinking deeply about those words, what they meant, and why I thought them.

The EMTs were fantastic but getting me loaded into the ambulance was excruciating. Once fastened in and on the ride to the hospital, I realized those words most certainly came from God. I didn’t understand and couldn’t be sure what He meant because I was still in so much pain, but now I felt a tiny bit of hope like a tiny spot of light at the end of a long tunnel.

The Narrow Road

It was a crooked, bumpy, week-long, painful, two-hospital journey. Looking back, I would compare it to finding a way through that maze in the movie “The Shining.”

It took just the right person or persons at just the right time and with just the right skills to get me to one of the few neurosurgeons and surgical teams that could and would repair the spine damage and a newly discovered birth defect that could have paralyzed me for life. I met the most amazing, caring, professional, healthcare workers along the way. There were so many that their numbers I cannot know them.

I am not 100% yet, but now back at work and no longer even need a cane to help with walking. I know I am still here for a reason. My God wants me here. I still have work to do. I may not know everything that’s in store for my future but am sure I must continue giving my testimony, set an example, and continue to serve.

Good People Vastly Outnumber Evil

Even if I could remember everyone to thank, the names would number so many that my story might surpass the article word limit. Thank you and bless you all for giving me another chance.

If not for my wonderful daughters, Beth and Angela, son-in-law Ben, and my best friend Sheila, I would not be giving this testimony. From deep in my heart, I give “Love From Me To You”. ……That should be a song, I think.

I believe, trust, and live by my faith, not by sight. I heard the wisest man I ever met tell me and multitudes of people that whatever your faith, study and practice it to the fullest. No religion or belief in the system has any worth if not practised.
