Does Schooling Interfere With Your Education?

Have you ever felt like your schooling interfere with your education? Your skills, your strengths, your way of learning aren’t controlled by you anymore? As allegedly Mark Twain said- ‘Don’t let your boy’s schooling interfere with his education.’ And now I understand why he said that. There are strong reasons behind it. But before I tell, I would like to ask you-

What does school actually for? Perhaps most of you will come up with the answer- “It’s a place for getting an education.” Even I used to believe that, but in reality, it isn’t like that, it’s completely rote learning. The current system of education proves it very well.

School Vs Education

The word Education came from a Latin word called ‘Educe’ which means to bring out or develop, and ironically that too I’ve learned from the internet, not from school. The schooling is doing just the opposite of it, they don’t bring out much, instead, they are filling your brain with kinds of stuff and existing knowledge so that you can pass the grade somehow and can collect those A’s. That’s not education.

Schools aren’t an environment for learning and building the future, It’s just a routine race that you have to run fast to get marks accordingly. They test your brain retention and memorizing power instead of your creativity & skills and how smart you are and can be. They are just force-feeding us.

The expert believes that schools don’t provide autonomy which is incredibly important for children. Every minute of their life is governed by the school system. This is the reason why we feel bored and demotivated in schools.

See, if it is true that we all have gifts from God, we all have our strengths & weaknesses, we all have different learning methods, we have different passions and interests, then why does school stuck on the same way of education? Why only one way of learning is preferred? There must be something that holding back them to just chalk and talk way.

For the past 50 years, we are able to customize literally everything then why can’t we do the same with our education system? Why can’t we upgrade it? Doctors never give the same medicine to every patient than why the schooling system can’t understand this?

There are always different ways to learn, there are auditory learners, kinesthetic learners, we all are different, our perspectives are different, our needs are different but we’ve been put into the rooms for 6 straight hours without autonomy.

Something Is Wrong With Schooling

School teaches you- ‘Use your time wisely, but they won’t teach you the Time management Skills, and moreover filled you with projects that need to be completed by the end of the week with an additional surprise test on Mondays.

This tight system doesn’t allow you to take your own decision regarding what to do or when to do it.

Real education teaches you how to solve the problems in different ways, schooling teaches you, ‘Oh! you solved the problem but it wasn’t the way we taught if you need marks you need to follow the textbooks.’ As it is said, the school teaches you how to memorize dots, real education teaches you how to connect them. Believe me, there is something wrong with our education system.

In schools, you are rewarded for doing exactly what you’re old, not what creative you do that other couldn’t.

There is a study that suggests that self-control and emotional well-being are the main components to success, then why aren’t we taught this in school? Why were we never taught how to handle rejections, bullies, and stress? And they say they care for our life and academic success. Besides they left a big ‘F’ highlighting that you are good for nothing.

And, perhaps this is the reason why suicide is the third leading cause in teenagers. According to 2015 data from the National Crime Records Bureau, 8,934 students are committing suicide every year. That’s one student every hour in India. (Source:- Wikipedia)

There is nothing to blame teachers. they’re surely doing amazing work, the problem is they work in a system without options. Teachers have no control over what they have to teach and the way they have to teach.

You know when I finished high school and completed graduation, I don’t even know the basic skills needed to face the real world. I don’t know how to get a job, how to be financially independent, how to pay taxes, how to do an investment, how to apply for a loan. All I know is that mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell, some mathematical equations & some wars & laws. Honestly, I’ve forgotten 80% of the things that were force-fed into my brain.

Don’t get me wrong, I strongly agree that all this learning, reading & understanding is good, but how can all this be more important than finding one’s strength & weakness. There is a reason why we all are sent to school to be prepared for the real world, which is changing fast, But our schooling hasn’t changed much for so long, every year we are preparing factory workers. It is a system that puts more focus on Industrial age values. Perhaps that can be the reason why the well-known dropouts found the success of their interest.

“Creativity is as important as literacy”

Ken Robinson, British Author

Now even Elon Musk says, ‘you don’t need a college degree to work with Tesla.’ That’s what the world needs, we need people who think creatively, critically.

There are great people in this world who didn’t fit with the traditional school system, but they realized it and overcome their failures, but not everyone can.

Now, Imagine if schools actually helped kids identify their strengths by exploring their talents from a young age and growing their skills over the 16 years instead of letting them all follow the same routine and leaving them confused in life after graduation. Wouldn’t it be better?

Students are 20% of our population but 100% of our future. So please, don’t let the fish climb the trees. Who knows how much young talent already lost its breath under our education system.

Changing the school system isn’t impossible, see Finland did it. Their education system is the best and outperforms every other country. Because they understood the need for it, and other countries like Sweden and Singapore are now doing the same. It can be done. It needs to get done.

So, what do you think of the current education system? If you are a student, Does your school interfere with your education? I know there are a lot of people in here that somewhere think the same way.

  • I sense a real urgency for you to find out the difference between an education and learning. I have few College Certificates and on College Diploma. I learned because I payed for the education through Student Loans. I got a good education which I wanted. I learned because I love to learn new things, concepts etc. I am 65 years old. I am still going to apply for a B.A. in Writing or in Business Management. Most of my Education is in Business and Management. I think it is important that we want to learn to get ahead, support yourself or a family or both one day. I love writing books and my Award Winning Blog on Wordpress.com I wish you success as you seem to have the same expectations i started out with. Then life opened my eyes and it has been working for me. Wish you success my fellow want to get an education person !!

    • I agree, education and learning isn’t limited to anything, not even a system. We can learn lesson by ourselves. And for education, School did teach important things. But the question is why we only have the same way of education, if we have different brains (but not every school are like that, infact some are doing tremendous work in the field of education),
And I said this because that what I’ve experienced.

Btw Its good to know about your journey. Thankyou for taking your time to explain this and for your kind words. I appreciate it.

      • You are welcome Ritish. I think it is important that we explain our views clearly and in a friendly way.

        • Yes, Of course. I love healthy discussions.
          Just so you know
We do have separate platform called 'Roundtable', if you visit our site you can see it. And I think it might be of your interest. Do consider visit there.

          • I just visited " Roundtable". It is very interesting and enabling for writers who are starting out or for writers who want a fresh start with their writing techniques. Thank you
            .

          • Glad you like this idea.
Yes, it's more like a 'meaningful' and 'quality' discussion platform.
Where anyone can come, interact with others, exchange their perspectives.

If you would like, and have time, you can do that too, so participants there can get the same support and inspiration from all the experienced ones.
Thankyou so much for giving your time.
I'm glad we held this conversation.

          • I am looking forward to dropping by there and talking with other writers. My first visit was to see how good an experience of the Roundtable actually is. The writings there made me think as i left a comment. Good minds are inspirational across the world of creating stories for others to consume with their eyes and brains. Thank you very much Ritish for that conversation we had. Bless you my friend !

          • Thankyou for your warm wishes. I appreciate your kindness.
And We’ll be more than happy to see you there whenever you feel free, just check in. It’ll be really good for us too.
Have a great day and week.

          • I will check in today again. I agree this is good for everyone. Thank you and I hope you have a great day and a good week Ritish.

      • 😀they also call us educators. Schooling is much about specific curriculum content. Education teaches us how to apply this knowledge together with appropriate skills to prepare the learner for the world of work. Education focuses on the whole...my opinion. really good post. makes us pondering

        • Right, The world needs people who think creatively, critically, innovately. That’s what school meant for to understand the need and skill of a children, rather than force-feeding them everything.
          Glad you agreed.

  • There is really a huge difference between schooling and education. We aren't taught the basic skills of life in schools, its an acquired characteristics which we develop ourselves. Just like you said, we are only tested academically, brain-wise and book-wise....
    Nice post👍🏻
    Do visit my blog❤

  • The interesting post. The issues here interest me because I write about education professionally.
You get all children/young people as one, and that is not correct.

I cannot write more today, will do later.

    Joanna

    • I may be wrong in some things.
But it's a critical issue that we are ignoring. I know you know much better than me.
Would love to know what you think of it. Waiting

      Thanks

  • Can I like this a million times? My youngest daughter is just graduating from high school and I’d say 90% of what she learned there will have no value to her in the real world. It’s sad. Schools are supposed to prepare people for life but, most students graduate with no clue of basic money management or other life skills. It’s time for change.

    • This is what needs to change. School must help kids from a young age to help them know & grow their skills and talent, and important skills needed in life, instead of just letting them confused on their important part of their life.
      That’s what education for.

  • You have raised an important topic. School doesn't interfere, rather it complements and supplements. School is not panacea for all ills, as our old Gurukul system used to be, where all aspects of life were taken care for learning, with no certification. Now the problem is that the basic life learning of values, culture, traditions, EI etc that should come from the family is also lacking primarily due to disintegration of joint families, and we blame schooling. No doubt, the education system needs a lot of reforms too, but I firmly believe what a family can inculcate, can't be done in schools.

    • Thankyou KK,
Actually I should've included the Gurukul example to let people understand it better.
And you’ve raised another concern about the basic learning that one must get from family first. Today’s world has changed a lot, concept of joint family is fading fast.
But for the schooling, I’m just saying they don’t teach about the important component of life on how to handle stress, time management skills, instead making children rote learners.

  • Honestly speaking, for me school used to be equivalent to education, didn't think much, just went to school, prepared for exams, get grades, promoted to the next class, that's it, nothing more nothing less...
It's when the real world hits me after school, I realized that school and education are two different things but go hand in hand together....
And I agree that schools don't prepare us for real life, but I must say it's not like everything the school has taught me is completely retained by my mind, I almost forgot most of it, so it's not always about the school, it's also about students......

    • You are right on your way. I appreciate your views.
All I'm saying that why they teach the same thing in a same way? If we all have our dreams, strengths and needs.
      There should be an option.
      There should be an autonomy.

      • Ritish our schools have lack of resources. We even don't have basic facilities for drinking water and snacks.

In the summertime, everyone starts sleeping in the class. I feel we don't have an education favourable environment. The day on which our teacher starts interestingly teaching us, I just fell in love with that topic.

  • You tackle the big issues, don't you? Lol !! Couldn't agree more. People's brains work differently and to shoehorn them into one system, one way..... sometimes I can't believe I retained ANYTHING from school, because memorization for no reason other than memorizing just doesn't work for me. I need a story or connection of the information for it to stick. Terrible at taking tests, too! Elon Musk's got it right, for sure. Some of the smartest people I know only went to high school.

    • Every student sing the same song.
And I said this, because it is even proven scientifically. No two brains work in same order. Than why we are being pushed to do.

Education asking for a change that our system ignoring 'intentionally'.
I'm really glad you agreed with me Seliza.

  • Wow u got a niche to express such issues beautifully.
By the way check out my blogs if u like them do follow me please.😊

  • there is really a great difference and a war between school and education also at the same tume we are told that both are synonymous...but no...schooling is hardly the so called "teaching"...these days!
..the real spirit of gaining the knowledge is hardly left anywhere...n according to me...i hold the schools responsible for it...we might be making good doctors and engineers...but definately not good person and good citizens!

    • Actually yes Ayushi,
Real education is not a name of any degree or certificate that can be shown to others as a proof. Education is the name of our attitude, actions, language and behaviours with other In real life.

  • I graduated from High School in the 50's. Women not only were not encouraged to get higher learning, they were blocked at every turn. My profession, Real Estate, after the kids were in Junior High only required I pass a multiple choice test. Both of my children reached the top of their profession by self-study, neither cared for college.

    • Your children set a good example. This is what everyone needs to know. You as a mother knows the meaning of real education for your children. This makes me happy.

And I know that education denied to the girls, and sadly this is still in continuation in rural areas of my country even after Various steps by the government.

  • " Teachers have no control over what they have to teach and the way they have to teach."
Hey this is Kunjal i am a student too! school goer I feel this is not true. every teacher has a capacity to devise her own way of teaching. If we can't change the huge marking system ( thousands reasons would be stated by people hence)
at least teachers need to be a little more compassionate and understanding don't you think?
And whatever - confidence, speaking, writing, or anything I have developed i would say the school has not developed it within me. Maybe I am socially aware about things and problems, but that is not granted by my school tbh. I have to do it and i will have to do it in the future too.
I really agreee with you on this!
Our schools get impressed when few students outperform in communication and other things. but that is because the students did themselves.
School is not playing a role in our skill development nor our emotional development.
" We must cope up with it" ...

    • Hi Kunjal,

      Thanks for your views.
I agree that teachers need to be more compassionate and devise their strategies, but of course they have to work within the system which makes them rigid to act on.
I had teachers that challenged the system and follow their own methods. I respect them because they taught me so much.
But unfortunately most of the teachers stuck in this 'vicious' circle of system, which is kinds obvious. As if you are working in the system you have to follow what you're told.
Not only you, I think everyone developed these emotions and mindset by their own. Because we have no option.
