When You Feel Like You’re Running Out Of Time

Running out of time is probably the world’s biggest problem and no one is solving it. Perhaps, it’s the thing that can’t be solved simply because obviously, we can’t control time.

That 24 hours we have in a day or more typically 23 hours 56 minutes seems isn’t enough to carry all our daily and crucial work. Every work we perform in between lifting our head off the pillow and then putting it back doesn’t give us that happiness and satisfaction we have with our capabilities.

In a nutshell, it’s like we are completing but not finishing.

I thought about it, while I was on a short break from writing. And I found a very interesting fact that I’ve experienced often and possibly most of you have. Still figuring out if it is a phenomenon, feeling, or whatever but it frequently happens that sometimes the amount of work being constant behaves clashingly every day.

Let me explain in a simple way- Suppose that the same amount of work falls on both days, one when you are able to finish it and one when you don’t. It’s not always clear why this happened but clearly, time is not the culprit here. Perhaps it is the way we pursue work that we do constantly every day.

We all live in a competitive environment especially if you are from the city, everyone loses no time. Everyone is doing something in a determined way. Your friends, colleagues, and competitors all are busy doing or becoming β€˜this’ or β€˜that’.

It simply makes us feel compelled that to run a race we have to put in our maximum. That seems the only way. Though instinctively you know that you are trying your best, unfortunately in a moment it gets dominated by the outcomes of comparison.

Through comparison, the perspective is promptly picked up by forces that are not our own, and simply dilutes our way of pursuing the task. Because we feel that others’ ways are way more prominent. And most probably this might also be the reason why sometimes the same amount of work behaves irrationally.

The List Makers’ Misfortune

What most people usually do in these situations is make a list to carry out their daily work in a timely manner. Every task is now governed by time-bound. I tried this several times when I was in school but always failed to keep up with that.

It might be effective for some who are able to follow their own guidelines, but not for everyone because there are certain limitations and cases that make this solution highly ineffective.

Making a schedule, timetable, list, or whatever you call it causes you to be fragile in a dynamic environment.

The list-maker people often end up doing things that aren’t the need of today, there might be other crucial things that must have been done before what you did according to the schedule you have made.

The art of prioritization and doing something out of the syllabus i.e., the schedule might be a good call to make you stop saying that you are running out of time. isn’t it?

So, why make the list when you really know that uncertainties are there? I suspect some of you might not agree with me here.

The Puzzle Of Time Management

In the scenario of time scarcity, it is likely that you’ve read about time management and skills.

Time management is a bit complex thing to explain to everybody as everyone possesses a different personality and deals with different circumstances. And moreover, I myself am not eligible to advise you.

But the thing that sets in is that time management is more of a change in personality rather than developing and learning a skill. Skills can be developed, but personality traits are really hard to change. So, instead of reading about time management skills on the internet why not acquire those sets of techniques that fit your personality?

Time management isn’t about doing something quickly as possible, it is about the time you can save for yourself.

In fact, if you are expecting greatness using time management skills, let me remind you that the definition of great is always changing as one keeps achieving greatness. No matter what we do, there’s always something more to be done in life.

Contradict With The Feeling Of Groundhog Day

Have you ever been in a situation where you feel like you are living the same day over & over again? The feeling of being stuck in the endless time loop.

It is the feeling when routine work seems the only work to do. The feeling of having no time but having enough time.

If you’re familiar with this feeling then you know how eagerly we wait for change and something new in our life in the expectation of our amazing days.

Eventually, it ends up creating a contradiction. Because when we choose something new to do, it is not always that something does work right the first time. Everything takes time.

Knowingly we long to know what is just around the next bend and end up creating an unnecessary work burden.

The fear of scarcity of time somewhere also depends on the things you enjoy and things you don’t.

Take A Genuine Break

When you feel like the work is getting over you, it’s the right time you should go for a break, a genuine break.

Your body and brain need to get healed. I guess, this leads to more productivity than time management itself. So, stop saying β€˜YES’ to everything, it is not always the default answer.

We are not giving ourselves β€˜Time to think.’

Here surely we are running out of time- A time to think.

Time to think is the most scarce thing that we have in recent times. There’s a book written stating that-

β€œWhen people write history about the time we are presently living in. It will not be about the amazing technologies we had. It’s going to be about how the human race has never been bombarded with so many choices and options.”

Every minute we are fighting to focus on something. There are so many distractions around us that are equally demanding our attention every day every minute.

A Genuine break means a break from all the distractions too. Give yourself some time. Time to think. In fact, our brain comes up with better ideas and solutions when it is not actively working and away from distractions.

Next time you take a genuine break believe you aren’t wasting your time. You are utilizing it for future use.

Make Sense?

I hope it is.

I must say in the end – Time is running out but for you know what.

So, what’s your theory about the scarcity of time and why it feels like we are running out of time? Is anything different you are experiencing?

There are people who are asking the same question and need a solution.

  • I love how you put this Ritish with great sound information to take breaks and the break down. It's so easy to go down the path of no return like your great pictures show,, πŸ’–πŸ’–

    • Thanks Cindy for your time today.
I value and respect your opinion,
Taking a genuine break is really important especially when you feel tired after a long busy schedule that to be performed every day.
I too sometimes fails to finish the task I suppose to do.

      • Oh it was my pleasure. Thanks for letting me know. It truly is and I feel that way right about now and didn't post as I usually do today.
We truly need to give ourselves permission and come back more ready to embrace the day!πŸ’–

  • What an interesting topic! A thought-provoking read, really. The fact that you get into this loop where everyday seems to be the clone of the next us real. Happens to me so often. Overall, wonderful post!

  • Hi, Ritish.
Mostly a very good blog (just one note - your 'auto-correct' put in "ceases" where you meant "causes"; curses on auto-correct! 🀯) ["Making a schedule, timetable, list, or whatever you call it ceases you to be fragile in a dynamic environment."] πŸ˜‰
As for lists, I am a "list-maker" and it works very well for me. The key is not being so bound by your list, once made, that you cannot deviate from it. I use lists as a 'guideline' for what I need to accomplish.
I would encourage you to move out of the "competitive environment" and simply do the most important things to be done for each day. We should not worry over whether or not someone else does better or accomplishes more - or less. No need for jealousy or anger.
"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ." Colossians 3:23-24

    • Haha! No, I do meant ceases πŸ˜€
But I get it what you said. That's why I put that line at the end of the para- that most of you might not agree with me here.
Because such things vary from person to person. I agree it works exceptionally well for most of you. I just mentioned the other side of it, that I think should be included when we talk about the scarcity of time.

Ofcourse, you're right about moving out of the competitive environment and focus on things that are important rather than focusing and worrying what others are doing.

Love that last para of your comment. Thank-you

      • β€œ...whatever you call it ceases you to be fragile in a dynamic environment.”
Hmm, then your syntax needs a little work. πŸ˜‰ A thing will not β€œcease” something else; a thing simply ceases.
Do you mean it β€œstops you from being fragile in a dynamic environment?”
The structure of this phrase makes it difficult to understand. Bear in mind I have utmost admiration for anyone who can write in a β€œforeign” language! ☺️ And English is one of the MOST difficult ones! πŸ‘

        • Thankyou for pointing that out.
I think that either 'ceases' or 'Fragile' word is creating this particular phrase difficult to understand and perhaps meaningless.
These are some stupid mistakes I always made. But, Thankyou for clarifying that. Much appreciated.

          Will correct that. πŸ˜€

  • Ritish, like Cindy, I appreciate that you included taking "genuine" breaks. We need them and are more productive when we do. Thank you for the helpful article.

    • Glad you find this helpful, Michele.
Breaks are indeed important for recovery and come back more energetic & productive.

  • Awesome Mr. Bean gif. Ironically, the fly buzzing around my head reminds me of his episode with the cupcake in the park. He is so funny. Oh, if life were similar to Mr.Bean's, every tiny event would seem an exciting obstacle, including the different frustrations that live within monotonous routines.

    • Haha! Yes I remember that episode.
You are so right his character chooses Happiness for himself. His way to puruse life and obstacles are way more different than an ordinary human.

  • INTERESTING POST. Amazing to think that this TIME we have to live is but a speck. Why waste it by not appreciating all that is around us but constantly focusing on goals and achievements. At my time of life this lesson is profound. How many sunsets will I see. How many flowers?? If we all while young took time to see hear, look and live, Touch beauty. Listen to Wind song etc etc they are the things about time that will matter at all ONE DAY. Thank you for writing.

    • You'll see lots of beautiful sunsets and flowers. Your comments put me into deep thoughts about every insignificant and significant things about life.
Time will continue to go on, its just us playing our parts and trying to understand every bit of time.

Thanks for your time today. Much love

  • Running out of time when we don't plan ahead. All of us have the same amount of time but how come some people accomplish more than others. Maybe we have to take into consideration the amount of distractions that we have when we are trying to accomplish something.😌

    • Exactly, there is so much distraction all around us that kept our brain focus on someone or something.
If that is the case one should really need to take this into consideration and find a way to keep him/herself distract from distraction itself.

      Thanks for your comment.

  • When I feel like you're running out of time β€”

I don't feel it in the present. Rather, I have come to a point of balance and stability.

Come to your presentation, it's excellent. You have learnt to build a dynamic blog & running it smoothly. I respect your work. I WANT MORE!

Your audience also talk and interact logically. That makes sense, right? 😁

  • None of us know how much or little time we have on this earth. The decision about how we spend that time is, therefore, a crucial one. Society today places enormous pressures on us. We run faster and faster, in an effort to keep up. The real issue though is one of priorities. What and whom do we truly value? Stepping back from our many tasks to decide that is vital. Whoever pursues righteousness as God defines it and kindness will find life and honor (whatever he may or may not accomplish in a material sense).

    • So agree with you Anna. Infact, the thing that person should reasonably aim for is to be happy. Feeling of running out of time is rely on assumptions about great future a happy future and this is where the worries start.
We should be great for what we have now compared to billions who have to struggle daily for afford a single meal.

Your comment holds a deep value to think about.

  • Yes it's very true now a days we always remain so busy that sometimes it becomes very hettic and then we need a complete break but unfortunately we don't get due to pressure of work. Well written! πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘ŒπŸ’

    • The word 'busy' can be best replaced by 'irrelevantly focused'. We are surrounded by distractions that are utilising our time without our consent. And we knowingly allow them to, because we don't quite understand what we are doing.

      Thank-you for your time today

  • There's too much to do, too much information, it's overwhelming, the news is almost always negative, raises have all but stopped while cost of living keeps rising, so running in place to stay just above the surface... life is overwhelming. I have to FORCE myself to take a break during work days, but I feel like if I stop even for five minutes, I won't have enough time to finish. It's an insane way to live. I feel like the invention of clocks ruined things for everyone, but it was actually probably the Industrial Revolution when it all started to really go downhill, lol .........

    • I can understand how it feels like when you take off a bit from the work. There's so much to do all the time.
I agree, it might be the industrial revolution and we've been dragged into it to always keep up with the pace, otherwise lost.
As I said, qe don't have time yo think for ourselves. It is the primary reason why we always feel that time is running out.

  • Honestly, time management ought to fit into our personality types. I've never thought of it that way before.
Making time for ourselves is super healthy and important.

  • Great article!! We all have the same time each day for sure. I know people who are super time managers. They seem to have a motor on their butt or something, then there's me.

    • And there's me too.

But I think, people who are super time managers might know the art of prioritization, that we sometimes just don't realise.
