“We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion.”
– John Keating, Dead Poets Society
Poetry—it’s more than just words on a page. It’s an emotion, a thought, a wave of feelings that sweeps through the soul. I may not write poetry myself (apart from the 2-3 attempts here and there), but I’ve always found solace and inspiration in the verses created by others. Every poet I’ve come across, whether in person, online, or through books, has added something special to this world—a spark, a voice, a story that resonates.
I want to dedicate this blog to all the poets out there, past and present—those whose words breathe life into our world and those who continue to keep the flame of poetry alive. This one is for you!
A Brief History of Poetry
Poetry has been with us for thousands of years, shaping civilizations and influencing cultures. From the epic poems of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey to Shakespeare’s sonnets, poetry has always had the power to immortalize thoughts, ideas, and emotions.
I was reading somewhere that the earliest known written poetry dates back to the Sumerians, around 2000 BCE. That’s mind-boggling. They used cuneiform to record their epic tales. Over the centuries, poetry has evolved, from the structured, meter-based verses of classic poets to the free-verse poems of today. It’s been used to capture historical events, personal journeys, and deep philosophical thoughts.

Why Is Poetry Important to Our World Today?
Poetry is a way to capture the essence of human experience. It touches on our emotions, our dreams, our struggles, and our triumphs. Today, with everything going on around the world, poetry serves as both a reflection and a healing tool. It allows us to express what often cannot be said in plain language.
I do mean, that a few lines of poetry can be more powerful than a thousand words of prose.
In the words of Robin Williams’ character in Dead Poets Society,
“Poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.”
The movie, so close to my heart, beautifully explores the power of words and how they can help us see the world with a fresh perspective. Poetry has the power to inspire and even to challenge the norms of society. It encourages us to honour individuality, to appreciate beauty in the smallest moments, and to fight for what is right.

The Healing Power of Poetry
Reading poetry can be a form of therapy. Whether it’s a poem about love, loss, nature, or personal reflection, poetry helps us process emotions and find clarity. It’s an outlet for our deepest thoughts and a source of comfort when we need it most. So many times, I’ve picked up a poetry book or read something from a fellow blogger and felt that instant connection.
Poetry doesn’t just entertain—it heals, it teaches, and it connects us to a larger human experience. It’s timeless, and it reminds us that we’re not alone in what we feel. Now, as I’m talking about the power of poetry, I do want to mention some of the legendary and timeless poetry.
Legendary Poetries That Have Shaped Our World
Some of the most unforgettable poems of all time have inspired generations. For example:
- “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe
- “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” by William Wordsworth
- “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou
- “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost
- If—” by Rudyard Kipling
- “Ozymandias” by Percy Bysshe Shelley
- “Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll
- “The Tyger” by William Blake

I struggle with writing poetry, it just doesn’t flow naturally for me. To be honest, I often don’t understand the poetry of others either.
February 2, 2025 at 10:51 am
That’s totally okay. Poetry isn’t always easy to write or interpret, it’s all about personal connection. Sometimes, it just takes the right poem at the right moment to click. 😊

Your writing is like poetry in so many ways, Ritish! Your words flow and hit the heart. Ok not poetry maybe but you have a wonderful way with words that simplify, tell a story and get to the heart of the matter in such a beautiful way. I know you would rock it just taking a few lines. You expressed so well and overjoyed with the mention! I too share your love of all of the for-said poets you mentioned!

Wow, this is such a heartfelt tribute to poetry and its power to touch the soul! 🌿✨ Poetry truly has a way of capturing emotions that simple words sometimes cannot. It reminds me of a time when I stumbled upon a poem that perfectly described a moment I had no words for, it was like the poet had read my heart. 💙 I became a fan of poetry through our WhatsApp Plus ultimate poetry group. The way poetry lingers in our minds, much like the verses of ancient psalms, proves its timeless beauty. Huge appreciation to all the poets out there who weave magic with words—your art makes the world richer. Thank you for this beautiful reflection! 🙏📖❤️
February 9, 2025 at 7:45 pm
I absolutely love how you put that. That moment you described, finding a poem that perfectly captured your feelings, hits so close to home. Huge appreciation to all the poets out there indeed. Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment, Peter.

A wonderful post, Ritish! I took a course on Shakespeare during my first year at Uni and it was one of my favorites! And how generous of you to share space on your post with poets in our blogging community. I believe I speak for many when I say your presence here is a treasure! ☀️
February 12, 2025 at 5:24 pm
That Shakespeare course must have been such a great experience. His words still hit deep even after all these centuries. And honestly, this community is filled with so many talented poets, it’s only right to celebrate them. our kind words truly made my day, Lisa 🙌🏼

Sometimes, it seems the Sumerians have “run a gamut” of sorts on various beginnings, knowledges, and accomplishments of things. 😁 Maybe it was all that alien assistance. Giggle
February 13, 2025 at 4:32 pm
Ha, you’re onto something 😄 But yeah, maybe that’s where all their genius came from.
February 14, 2025 at 5:04 pm
Great post! I love poets you mentioned of old, and will check out your new list. My mother could read poetry out-loud (for it is meant to be read out-loud) like no one I know.
February 16, 2025 at 11:20 am
That’s so cool, your mom must’ve had a real gift for bringing poetry to life. There’s nothing like hearing it read aloud. Hope you have fun checking out the poets on the list.
