We are part of a country where more than 130 crore people live 48.18% are female ( according to a 2017 survey report) and more than 38% of the female population comes under the menstrual cycle.
This statistic really uncovered the lack of awareness in society that around 80% of girls are surprised when they get their first period.
Having a menstruation period is a natural process, this has nothing to do with society, there should be no shame. That’s why society needs to know. The awareness should be spread.
Isn’t it our responsibility?
Menstruation is the most rarely discussed topic in our homes, schools, or in our friend circle.
Menstruation is a biological process when blood and tissue from the uterus come out through the vagina usually in monthly basis. It also helps a body to prepare for pregnancy menstrual cycle and menstruation periods are controlled by hormones like estrogen and progesterone.
Menstruation is the gift given by God to women. But due to some misconceptions and myths, this gift of God has snatched the opportunity of women to go to school, society, or even in religious places like temples also.
I know in this era topics like this are often discussed in society.
Unlike urban areas, rural areas have around 25 million girls who drop out their school because of the poor facility of menstruation hygiene like toilets, sanitary, napkins, etc. Low awareness of menstruation is widespread across many states in India.

23 Million Women Drop Out Of School Every Year When They Start Menstruating In India …
70% of parents with menstruating daughters considered menstruation as dirty. Don’t know why. Maybe because of society’s framework or maybe due to the culture in which they were raised.
In many places of rural areas, menstruating women are restricted to sleeping in their rooms, and not allowed to cook in the kitchen moreover no one will touch her until her cycle completes irrespective of the pain that she feels during menstruation.
I’m the single man at my home along with 4 women including my mother and 2 sisters, and I have seen & witnessed that they are not ready to discuss the topic with me because of shyness or of the same misconceptions and myths that they get from our own society.
In rural areas schools are also not very helpful for discussing menstrual hygiene. A survey in 2015 by the ministry of education found that 65% of school in a rural area doesn’t teach students about menstruation.
When we talk about cities there are many stores where sanitary napkins are available but when it comes to rural areas this makes low availability of low-quality napkins. Using low-quality napkins or no use of napkins increases the chances of infection and hinder the day-to-day task of women during their periods.
The myths and taboos surrounding menstruation need to be broken effectively.
A proper awareness program must be implied to educate women of all ages that what is mensuration and how unawareness will tremendously harm their health.
I appreciate that movies like padman are influencing society to some extent and a bit of change comes into the mind of women many women started using pads during the cycle, but still we have to go through a tough challenge of this mindset of menstruation…
At last, I would say that we are living in the 21st century and doing well in developing our country in various areas like transportation, education, infrastructure, defense, etc. But due to some old myths still, the sanitary napkins are given in black polythene or cover, we should have to change our mind and I’m not forcing anyone but every girl should have to change her mind and should discuss with family, brothers, friends whenever they are in pain.
Because that’s how we change.

then for us its a matter of shame..“
