<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Imagine being 13 years old and witnessing something that makes you run away from home. That&#8217;s exactly what happened to Domtila Chesang, a Kenyan woman who became a powerful voice against a terrible tradition: of <strong>Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before we tell you about her incredible story, you should know what exactly FGM is. Female Genital Mutilation or FGM refers to the practice of removing or injuring a girl&#8217;s external genitalia. It&#8217;s often seen as a religious or cultural ritual, but it has devastating physical and emotional consequences. We&#8217;re talking about severe pain, infections, and even death. It takes away a girl’s right to a healthy and happy life.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="676" height="369" data-attachment-id="7544" data-permalink="https://theblogera.com/domtila-chesang-the-kenyan-warrior-who-said-no-to-the-knife/female-genital-mutilation/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Female-Genital-Mutilation.webp?fit=1000%2C546&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1000,546" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-title="Female-Genital-Mutilation" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Female-Genital-Mutilation.webp?fit=676%2C369&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Female-Genital-Mutilation.webp?resize=676%2C369&#038;ssl=1" alt="Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)" class="wp-image-7544" style="width:685px;height:auto" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Female-Genital-Mutilation.webp?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Female-Genital-Mutilation.webp?resize=300%2C164&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Female-Genital-Mutilation.webp?resize=768%2C419&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Female-Genital-Mutilation.webp?resize=600%2C328&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Female-Genital-Mutilation.webp?resize=945%2C516&amp;ssl=1 945w, https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Female-Genital-Mutilation.webp?resize=150%2C82&amp;ssl=1 150w" sizes="(max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Courtesy: <a href="https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/666705-treatment-of-fgm-complications-cost-health-systems-1-4-billion-per-year-who.html?tztc=1">Premium Times Nigeria</a></figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite efforts to stop it, FGM is sadly still practised in many parts of Africa and the Middle East. There are a lot of reasons behind this, like some believing it&#8217;s necessary for girls to become women, or that it controls their sexuality. But the truth is, it hurts girls and takes away their bodily autonomy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s a complex issue with deep roots, some dating back centuries. Lack of education and misinformation keep this harmful practice alive.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Incredible Story of Domtila Chesang</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="490" height="331" data-attachment-id="7538" data-permalink="https://theblogera.com/domtila-chesang-the-kenyan-warrior-who-said-no-to-the-knife/domtila-chesang-ebook/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Domtila-Chesang-Ebook.png?fit=490%2C331&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="490,331" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-title="Domtila-Chesang-Ebook" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Domtila-Chesang-Ebook.png?fit=490%2C331&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Domtila-Chesang-Ebook.png?resize=490%2C331&#038;ssl=1" alt="Domtila Chesang" class="wp-image-7538" style="width:505px;height:auto" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Domtila-Chesang-Ebook.png?w=490&amp;ssl=1 490w, https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Domtila-Chesang-Ebook.png?resize=300%2C203&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/theblogera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Domtila-Chesang-Ebook.png?resize=150%2C101&amp;ssl=1 150w" sizes="(max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Domtila&#8217;s story is what makes her a true hero. She grew up in West Pokot County, Kenya, where FGM was a common practice. Life there revolved around community and tradition. But even as a child, Domtila felt a spark of something different. When she was just 13, she witnessed her cousin being subjected to FGM. The pain and fear she saw ignited a fire in her – she knew she couldn&#8217;t let this happen to other girls.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Domtila didn&#8217;t wait around. She started speaking out against Female Genital Mutilation, even at a young age. Imagine a teenager taking a stand against a deeply ingrained tradition. Talk about bravery! She talked to friends, family, and anyone who would listen. She even used radio programs, a powerful tool in Kenyan communities, to spread awareness about the dangers of FGM.</p>

<span id="more-7533"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The I_Rep Foundation</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Domtila soon realized that change needed to happen at the community level. So, she founded the <strong><a href="https://irepfoundation.org/">I_Rep Foundation</a></strong>. This amazing organization works to educate people about the harms of FGM and empower girls to make their own choices about their bodies. They even provide scholarships to keep girls in school, which is another powerful tool against harmful practices.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">She even started working closely with local leaders, elders, and parents to challenge the cultural norms that keep FGM alive.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Standing up to tradition isn&#8217;t easy. Domtila faced criticism and even threats from those who believed FGM was necessary. There were times when her activism brought tension within her own community. But Domtila persevered. She knew that the future of girls in her community depended on her courage.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For many years, Despite her remarkable accomplishments and unrelenting efforts toward ending this harmful cultural practice, Chesang&#8217;s name remains largely unfamiliar outside of her local community. It was only after some local media outlets published her story, that she got some attention from international media. She has received numerous awards and recognition, including the prestigious Mandela Washington Fellowship.</p>
