Important Note: Yes, it’s Sunday. No, I didn’t forget what day it is. I just scheduled it wrong. I know it came late, but in my defence, so was the ring. (You’ll see what I mean.)

Patrick Mohr was on holiday in Italy with his wife and kids. Sixteen years married, a mountain stream, kids splashing around. A pretty normal family day.

Then one of the kids grabbed his hand in just the wrong way and his 18-karat wedding band slid right off. The water was moving fast and the ring was gone in a second.

Frozen

He just stood there. Sixteen years on that finger, and now it was somewhere downstream and he knew he’d never see it again.

He and his wife reacted completely differently. He wanted to mope (his words, more or less). She walked off downstream to find anyone at all who could help. The only other people around were three young Italian guys: Filippo Palagi, Nicola Malloggi and Edoardo Poggi.

They listened to the whole story and were honestly pretty pessimistic about it. They didn’t even have goggles to lend. But they said they’d help anyway, and they made a promise that sounds like a joke until you see what happened next. Like Frodo and the gang, they’d find the ring and bring it all the way to Ireland.

Three Days in the Water

They started with kayaks and found nothing. Day two was the same.

Most of us would’ve called it there, and nobody would’ve blamed them. They had already given up two days of their own holiday for a stranger’s ring.

On day three they roped themselves to boulders and went in with snorkelling gear, in the fastest-moving stretch of the stream. Malloggi saw a glint in the river sand, grabbed a handful, came up for air and opened his hand. The ring was sitting in his palm. Very Lord of the Rings.

The Text

Mohr was at dinner with his family in Tuscany, stirring a pot of pasta, when his phone buzzed. It was an Italian number he didn’t know, and the message was a photo of a gold ring with a caption: “Hi Sméagol, look what we found.”

He told CBC he just put the phone back in his pocket and kept stirring, totally in shock. His wife saw his face and asked what happened. Then he showed everyone, and by his account chaos followed.

And Then They Flew to Ireland

They could have posted it, or met him somewhere in Italy so he could grab it. Instead they offered to deliver it themselves so Mohr could finish his holiday in peace.

So the three of them got on a Ryanair flight (a lot quicker than Frodo’s eighteen months) and turned up at his door in Ireland dressed as hobbits, singing songs from the films.

I would love to have seen his face.

He took them to Glendalough, the thousand-year-old abbey and lake in the Wicklow Mountains, and to Glenmalure Valley. Then Guinness in the local pub and a proper Irish dinner at home, with promises of friendship that sounded like they’d stick.

What Stayed With Me

Mohr’s takeaway was that sometimes you have to let go of control, put it out there and ask for help, and sometimes somebody answers. I like that because he didn’t solve anything himself. His wife went and asked, and three strangers said yes.

They didn’t owe him anything, they weren’t confident they’d find it, and it cost them three days of their holiday. They did it anyway, and then made it funny and a bit ridiculous on top, which honestly makes it better.

Palagi said the whole thing amazed him, and borrowed a line from Bilbo about how you step out your door and have no idea where the road will sweep you. A ring in a river ended up with three friends in hobbit costumes in an Irish living room.

When Payton Obert was 18 months old and in hospital, a charity gave her a teddy bear.

She kept it. For years, long after the hospital stay was a distant memory, the bear stayed with her and so did the feeling that had come with it. Someone had thought about her when she was small and scared and not doing well. Someone had sent something soft and comforting into a situation that didn’t have much softness in it.

That one thing stayed.

The Stand

When Payton turned 8, she decided she wanted to do for someone else what that teddy bear had done for her. She wasn’t sure how to start, so she started the only way an 8-year-old reasonably can.

She set up a lemonade stand.

In 2018, she raised $768. All of it went to buying toys for children in hospital.

Seven hundred and sixty-eight dollars is not nothing. For an 8-year-old, it’s a lot. But even she probably didn’t imagine what would happen next.

What Happened Year by Year

2019: she set up the stand again. The Cincinnati community had heard about what she was doing. The proceeds multiplied tenfold.

2020: COVID hit. Lockdowns, closed businesses, families stretched thin everywhere. Payton, now 10, didn’t scale down – she scaled up. She launched Payton’s Pals, a network of 8 lemonade stands across Cincinnati and Kentucky. Together they raised $35,000 in cash and toy donations.

2021: Payton’s Lemonade Stand became a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit. 100 young people. 30 stands. $60,000 raised on a single day.

2022: $80,000.

2023: $100,000.

2024: $125,000.

2025: 100 stands across Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. $150,000. In three hours.

2026 (this year) $170,000. Stands now in West Virginia, Baltimore, New Mexico.

Total raised to date: $5 million.

She’s 16.

What It Does Now

Long gone is the days where it was just toys for kids in hospital beds. Payton’s Lemonade Stand now provides food, clothing, books, and school supplies to children and their families across Cincinnati and beyond – for any reason. Economic hardship. Prolonged illness. Whatever the situation is.

Fire departments show up to support the stands. Schools participate. Girl Scout troops, local businesses, sports teams. What started as one child with a folding table and a pitcher has become something genuinely hard to describe, a movement built by kids, for kids, powered entirely by the simple idea that if something helped you once, maybe you could pass it on.

The Thing at the Start of All of This

Payton talked about the teddy bear in a video she made about the whole journey. She held it up – still has it, by the way and tried to explain what it had meant to her at 18 months old, in hospital, when it arrived.

She can’t fully remember that time, she said. But she knows it helped. And she knows she wanted other kids to have whatever it was that helped them through.

That’s the whole engine of a $5 million charity. A bear. And an 8-year-old who thought: I want someone else to have what I had.

This is one of those stories where you read the numbers – $5 million, 100 stands, 3 hours – and the numbers are genuinely staggering. But strip them away and what you’re left with is just a kid who got a teddy bear and never forgot how it felt to receive something kind from a stranger.

The bear is still on her shelf. The stands are still going up every summer. And somewhere in Cincinnati, right now, another child in a hospital bed is getting a toy.

Rika Matsuda was seven years old and very excited about her new bike. It was faster than her old one and she was riding it around a park in Japan when she found out, a little late, that the brakes didn’t quite work the way she’d expected.

She went straight into a wall. Her foot began turning purple almost immediately. And then, out of nowhere, a man appeared. Tall, strong, wearing a suit, the kind of person a seven-year-old might find a bit intimidating. Rika wasn’t sure about him at first.

Then he said, “Are you OK?”

She said she knew from his voice, kind and gentle, that he was a nice man. And just like that, the intimidation dissolved.

What He Did

He helped her up. He took her to a water fountain and helped clean the cut on her foot. He lent her his phone so she could call her grandfather. And then, while they waited together for her grandfather to arrive, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a piece of white paper.

He showed her how to fold an origami crane.

“He was really good at folding origami,” Rika said later. “Maybe he wanted me to think about the paper instead of my foot.”

That’s such a gentle, specific kind of kindness. Just a man in a suit, sitting with a hurt seven-year-old in a park, folding paper into a bird so she’d have something to look at besides her purple foot.

When Rika’s grandfather arrived, the man helped get the bike home. And when it was time to say goodbye, he handed her the origami crane without a word and then walked away into the afternoon, back to wherever he’d come from.

Ten Years on a Desk

Rika kept the crane.

For ten years, it sat on her desk. She’d look at it sometimes and remember the man and his kind voice, the water fountain, the folded paper bird that had appeared out of nowhere on the worst afternoon of her seven-year-old life.

She never unfolded it. There was no particular reason to. It was a crane, not a note. She had no reason to think there was anything inside.

And then she sat down to do her homework.

The Assignment That Changed Everything

Rika was in high school now. Her English teacher, Benjamin Johnson, had been using NPR’s “My Unsung Hero” series as a teaching exercise, asking students to write about an encounter with a Good Samaritan. Someone who had helped them, quietly, without being asked.

Rika thought of the man in the park. She thought of the crane.

And then, sitting in that class, she was seized by a sudden feeling – a premonition, almost. What if he’d written something on the paper before he folded it?

She went home quickly. She sat down at her desk. And very carefully, she began to unfold the crane she had kept for ten years.

Inside, pressed into the folds, were two characters. A Japanese idiom, written by a stranger a decade earlier.

“We should treasure each time we cross paths with someone because it might never happen again.”

Or more simply: cherish the moment.

The Thing About That

The man didn’t know Rika would keep the crane. He didn’t know she’d carry it into her teenage years, or that one day a homework assignment would prompt her to open it, or that the message he’d pressed into the paper folds would arrive exactly when she was old enough to understand what it meant.

He folded a crane for a seven-year-old with a hurt foot, and he wrote something inside it, and then he walked away. That was all he did. The rest of it happened on its own, ten years later, in a girl’s bedroom somewhere in Japan, when the paper unfolded and the message was still there.

“Then I realised even more how kind and how nice of a man he was,” Rika said.

There’s a version of this story where she never unfolds the crane. Where it stays on her desk forever, a beautiful object with a secret nobody ever finds. That version is also nice, in its way.

But this version – where a homework assignment leads a teenager back to a seven-year-old’s memory, and the memory opens up to reveal that a stranger thought of her enough to leave a message inside a bird, is something else entirely.

Cherish the moment.

He clearly did.

Jayden Sink and Kimberly Laprad had a plan.

A vacation rental in Waves, North Carolina. About 45 guests – family, close friends, the people you actually want in the room when you make a promise for life. A small, intimate wedding on Hatteras Island. Simple enough.

Then a coastal storm rolled in, damaged N.C. Highway 12 on Pea Island, and cut off road access to Hatteras Island entirely. Most of their 45 guests were now on the wrong side of the closure, with no way in.

Jayden and Kim were already on the island. With a handful of wedding party members, a dress, some rings, and a ceremony that was supposed to happen in two days.

They had a choice. Call it off. Or figure something else out.

“Everyone Is Invited”

A friend named Alexia Wills took to social media the day before the wedding and posted something to the effect of: hey, if you’re stranded on Hatteras Island and you’ve got nothing to do Saturday – come to a wedding.

They weren’t expecting much. Maybe some neighbours. A few curious locals. A handful of fellow stranded visitors who had nothing better to do.

What they got was Hatteras Island deciding, collectively and without being asked, to throw two strangers the wedding of their lives.

What the Island Did

Within hours, things started materialising from everywhere.

Stacey Saunders, who runs Frisco Woods Campground, offered the campground’s pavilion for the ceremony and reception. She opened cabins for the wedding party. And, having met the couple approximately 24 hours earlier, she volunteered to officiate.

DJ Kel showed up to do the music. Gwenyth Airhart stepped in as the wedding photographer. Food and supplies started arriving from businesses and residents across the island – Hatteras Snowballs, Hatti HoCo, Buxton Seafood, Sandy Paws Grooming, Orange Blossom, Frisco Woods Campground itself. A livestream was organised and donated by Samantha Stevens of Hatteras Tech so that the guests stuck on the mainland could at least watch.

By Saturday, what was supposed to be a small private wedding with 45 guests had become something nobody had a name for. An impromptu community party. A 400-person celebration for two people almost nobody on the island had known existed a week earlier.

The Ceremony

Stacey Saunders stood up in front of the crowd she’d helped build and acknowledged the obvious.

“As you guys know, I’ve only known them for about 24 hours,” she told everyone.

She read a poem the couple had chosen about two lives coming together. Then she turned to the bride and, with perfect comic timing, said: “Kim, let’s get to business.”

The couple exchanged vows and rings. They poured two colours of sand into a single container, a symbol of two lives becoming one. Saunders explained that once blended, the grains could no longer be separated back into their original containers.

She told them their new life would be a blend of children, family members, friends – and then paused for the line that got a laugh from 400 strangers who had somehow ended up at this wedding: “and in your case, strangers.”

Then she pronounced them husband and wife.

And then the real party started.

What Happened After

DJ Kel kept the music going. The dance floor filled. People who had been total strangers to each other 48 hours earlier, and strangers to the bride and groom right up until that morning, danced together until long after the ceremony ended.

Food ran a little low by the end. With 400-plus people showing up when you’d planned for 45, that’s not surprising. But according to Saunders, contributions just kept arriving from around the island. “It just came from everywhere,” she said.

Brandon Robinson, one of the original 45 guests who had made it onto the island before the closure, posted about it afterward.

“We will + everyone included will talk about this for years to come. To say the absolute least. We are at a loss for words. This is paradise on Earth! You guys made it happen!”

The Larger Thing

There’s something about this story that’s hard to pin down exactly, but I’ll try.

Most of the 400 people at that wedding had no reason to be there. They didn’t know Jayden or Kim. They hadn’t been invited. They were stranded tourists, local residents, people just going about their Saturday on a storm-disrupted island. And when the invitation came – casual, last-minute, on social media – they showed up. With food. With a DJ. With a photographer. With a pavilion. With a willingness to dance at a stranger’s wedding until the music stopped.

The storm closed the highway. It couldn’t close the island.

Kindness, at its best, does something very simple: it looks at a situation that could go badly and decides that it doesn’t have to. Jayden and Kim could have had a cancelled wedding and a sad drive home. Instead, they have a story they’ll tell for the rest of their lives, about the time a hurricane took their guest list and Hatteras Island replaced it with 400 strangers who danced like they’d known them forever.

“Most arrived as strangers,” the Island Free Press wrote at the end of their piece. “By the end of the night, they were all part of the wedding.”

That’s it. That’s the whole thing.

If you’ve turned on the news lately, or even just scrolled for five minutes, you already know why we’re writing this.

Things feel heavy right now. Depression rates are climbing. Around 280 million people worldwide are currently living with depression, and depression remains a major contributor to the roughly 720,000 suicide deaths recorded globally each year. Numbers like that are easy to scroll past, but they’re not abstract, they’re neighbors, coworkers, people in our own comment sections.

And most days, it’s easy to walk around believing that people just don’t show up for each other anymore.

That’s exactly why we started The Kindness Report six months ago, and why we’re not stopping anytime soon.

We wanted a space that didn’t ask anyone to pretend the world isn’t hard right now. It clearly is. But somewhere between the headlines, people are still doing quietly remarkable things for total strangers. A postal worker driving 52 miles to return a lost wallet. A stranger inviting someone into their tent at a festival because he looked like he needed a place to belong. A woman finding, decades later, the boy whose life she once changed. None of it makes the news. All of it is real.

This week, someone reminded us why that matters more than we even realized.

Victoria Ponders, a fellow writer, counselor, and one of the kindest voices we know online, wrote the most heartfelt piece about The Kindness Report hitting its six-month mark. She talked about tearing up at nearly every story, about needing “a regular dose of goodness” delivered to her inbox, especially now. Reading it, we were reminded that this isn’t just a series to us. It’s genuinely someone’s small reason to keep believing people are good, in a week where that’s not always easy to believe.

So today isn’t really about us. It’s about saying thank you to Vicki for seeing what we’re trying to do and giving it a place in her own corner of the internet, and it’s about asking you to go read her words for yourself.

Read Vicki’s post here →

Must Read: The Kindness Report

And if today has been a hard one, hang on. Good things are still happening. Somewhere, right now, someone is being kind to a stranger for no reason at all. We’ll keep looking for those stories, every week, for as long as it takes.

I would also like to share this song – ‘Good Things Happen All the Time ‘– because I think this song should be the perfect theme for our kindness report too. I’m leaving you here with the lyrics in the hope that this will make your day a little better.

Some days the good things aren’t easy to find
But if you’re looking you’ll see plenty around
It’s in the background and out in plain sight
Good things happen all the time

More than often people will be kind
Be good hearted and help each other out
Good news won’t often make the headlines
But good things happen all the time
Good things happen all the time

Ooh, ooh
Good things happen all the time
All the time

Clashes and conflicts get all the hype
But I think most of us get along just fine
Trouble may be in the spot light
But good things happen all the time

There’s a couple shadows but plenty more lights
Some doing wrong, but so many doing right
Behind the clouds is a sun ready to shine
Good days happen all the time
Good things happen all the time

Ooh, ooh
Good things happen all the time
All the time
Good things do happen
All the time

Thank you for joining in today. I’ll see you on Saturday with another Kindness Report from somewhere around the world.

In 1999, Ronald Sakolsky (an American educator) was watching television when a report came on about a woman in China planting trees to stop the desert from spreading.

Her name was Yin Yuzhen. She had been doing it for years, quietly and determinedly, on the edge of the Mu Us Desert in Inner Mongolia. The desert was advancing. She planted trees. That was her answer to it.

Something about that image stayed with Sakolsky. He sent her $5,000.

He’d never met her. He had no particular connection to China, no personal stake in the outcome. He just watched the report and felt something, and then acted on it.

The next year, he flew to Inner Mongolia and planted trees alongside her.

And then life moved on the way it does, and the two lost touch.

What the $5,000 Became

About 50,000 trees.

That’s what grew from that donation over the following 27 years – 50,000 trees where desert used to be, on land that had been bare and shifting when Yin Yuzhen first started working on it. The barren stretch at the edge of the Mu Us Desert is now, by most accounts, a sea of green.

Yin eventually took to social media, trying to find the man who had believed in her work enough to fund it. She searched for him. And this August, nearly three decades after their first meeting, they were reunited in Inner Mongolia.

The reunion made news across China. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson commented on it. The story of an American who had sent money to a stranger in China to plant trees, and then showed up to plant them himself, and whose trees were now a forest – that story travelled.

The Thread That Led to Zhou

But there’s another story running alongside this one. A quieter one.

In 2000, when Sakolsky was participating in a China-US teacher exchange program, a Chinese teacher named Zhou Xiangli arrived in the US as part of the same program. She had been assigned to his school, and she was struggling to find a place to stay.

Sakolsky’s role in the program didn’t require him to do anything about that. But he invited her to stay with his family anyway.

For the duration of her time in America, Zhou became, in Sakolsky’s words, his “fifth daughter.” His family included her in everything – family outings, local Chinese restaurants when she was homesick, and one particularly memorable evening when they all dressed up to take her to see Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in the cinema. The film was in Chinese with English subtitles. Every time something puzzled the family, they turned to Zhou and asked her to explain.

She gave him a nickname – “Mr. Mean.” He gave her one – “Ms. Last Minute.” They had great conversations. There were jokes. His family made her feel that their home was her home.

Then she went back to China, and they lost touch. Twenty-six years passed.

How They Found Each Other Again

When the news about Sakolsky’s reunion with Yin Yuzhen began spreading, a fellow teacher sent Zhou a video of it. “Mr. S will be in China soon,” the colleague told her.

Zhou was two days away from leaving Beijing for Hetian, a remote city in Xinjiang where she had signed up to spend three years teaching English to senior school students. She rushed to the hotel where Sakolsky was staying and found him in the lobby.

“After 26 years, he’s still enthusiastic and wears his heart on his sleeve,” Zhou said. “He cries whenever strong emotions well up in him.”

He told her she hadn’t aged.

During their video call after she’d arrived in Hetian, Sakolsky mentioned one of her former American students, a boy named Vito Grassi, who still greets Sakolsky with “Ni hao” and still asks about Zhou. Twenty-six years later. From a classroom she taught in for a single year.

The Classroom in Hetian

Zhou teaches English to students in a remote city at the foot of the Kunlun Mountains now. She took the post because she remembered what education had done for her. She grew up in a small town in Hunan Province, and learning had taken her out into a wider world. She wanted to do that for someone else.

Last week, she played her students a listening exercise about notable figures. It was harder than she expected. She played it again and again. And then, slowly, she started to see smiles spreading across the classroom, the particular kind of smile that comes when something that was difficult suddenly makes sense.

After class, several students came up to her. “Thank you,” they said. “We understood such a long passage. You are a good teacher.”

A small moment. She said it stayed with her.

The Thing That Connects All of It

There’s a line Zhou said during her video call with Sakolsky that might be the best summary of what the Kindness Report is really about.

“As members of a global village, even small acts of kindness can have a butterfly effect. If each of us puts that kindness into practice, we can make the world a better place.”

Sakolsky didn’t plant 50,000 trees. He sent $5,000 to a woman he saw on television, and then showed up the following year to plant alongside her. Yin Yuzhen planted the trees. The desert retreated.

Sakolsky didn’t become Zhou’s lifelong friend by grand design. He invited a stranger to stay with his family because she needed somewhere to go, took her to see a film, gave her a nickname, and made her feel at home. Twenty-six years later, a news story about some trees brought them back together.

And in Hetian, far from all of this, Zhou plays an English recording again and again until the smiles appear.

Kindness passed from person to person. $5,000 into 50,000 trees. One home opened into a lifetime of warmth carried forward. One teacher, planting seeds of her own in a classroom at the foot of a mountain.

“I planted the seed with each and every one of you,” Sakolsky told his former Chinese students when he returned to visit them this August, “and you have grown into trees.”

He’d know.

Jasper Steinmetz was walking through a park in Austin, Texas, when he noticed the backpack.

It was red, and it had the Indiana University logo on it. Steinmetz had just graduated from Indiana. He figured – why not? – and walked over to say hello to the man carrying it.

That decision, made on a complete whim in a park, is the entire reason this story exists.

What the Backpack Was Carrying

The man’s name was Sampson James. He confirmed he was from Indiana. What Steinmetz didn’t know yet – what nobody walking past would have known – was the full weight of what that red backpack had seen.

On a hunch, Steinmetz Googled the name after they spoke.

Sampson James had been Indiana University’s star running back. An amazing athlete, as Steinmetz himself put it. The kind of player whose name meant something in college football – someone who had carried a team, who had a future lined up, who had every reason to believe the next chapter was going to be bigger than the last.

And then his knee gave out. His NFL dream ended before it started. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He dropped out of university. And somewhere in the gap between who he had been and what had happened since, he ended up on the streets of Austin, carrying everything he owned in that red IU backpack for eight months.

What Steinmetz Did Next

A different person might have filed the information away and moved on. Felt sad about it for a day, maybe. It’s a hard story and there are hard stories everywhere.

Steinmetz set up a GoFundMe instead.

His thinking was simple: he and Sampson had the same university in common. That was enough. He put the story out there and let the IU community decide what to do with it.

They decided to show up.

Former IU teammates donated. Strangers who had cheered for Sampson from the stands donated. People who had never watched a single game but recognised something in the story donated. The campaign raised $20,000.

“Thanks to an overwhelming wave of support – including generous donations from former IU teammates- we successfully got Sampson out of homelessness,” Steinmetz wrote in a GoFundMe update. “The initial funds allowed us to secure a safe rental apartment for him, supply him with essential clothing, food, and household furniture, and give him the foundation he needed to rebuild his life and achieve stability.”

What Sampson Said

When he recalled that first moment in the park – the young man who walked over because of a logo on a bag – Sampson’s response was exactly what you’d hope for.

“He told me he went to IU as well. So I was like, wow – that’s amazing. Go Hoosiers.”

And then he said something that deserves its own line: he recognised that the Hoosier community was counting on him to make the blessing count. And he said he was not going to let them down.

The Larger Thing

There’s a detail at the centre of this story that is almost too neat to be real, except it is.

The backpack that marked Sampson James as a man living on the streets – the one that contained everything he owned, the visible sign of how far things had fallen – was the same backpack that saved him. It was the IU logo on that bag that caught Steinmetz’s eye. That made him walk over. That started the conversation. That led to the Google search. That led to the GoFundMe. That led to the apartment, the furniture, the clothes, the foundation.

The thing that carried his lowest point also carried his way out of it.

Steinmetz was clear about what moved him to act: they had nothing in common but the same university on their CVs and the same design on their bags. That was enough. Not a prior relationship. Not a personal connection. Just a shared detail, noticed at the right moment by someone who decided it was reason enough to stop and say hello.

Kindness doesn’t always need a grand justification. Sometimes a backpack will do.

Adam James had been putting off going to a music festival for years.

Not because he didn’t want to. He loves music deeply – he’s an aspiring drum and bass DJ who performs under the name Adzo, and the thought of being surrounded by it for five days at Boomtown Fair in Hampshire should have been everything. But Adam is autistic and has ADHD, and the idea of navigating all of that alone, in a crowd of strangers, was enough to keep him away year after year.

“I’ve always put it off because I’ve never had anyone to go with,” he said.

This year, at 24, he decided to go anyway. He worked hard and saved all year for the ticket. His dad Andy was worried enough that he had a plan: if things became too overwhelming, he’d drive to Hampshire and bring Adam home.

Adam set up his tent. And then someone asked to borrow his tent mallet.

A Tent Mallet

It was the guys from Bristol, camping nearby. One of them needed a mallet. Adam lent it. A small transaction, completely unremarkable, the kind that happens a hundred times at any festival.

Except they noticed something in the exchange. Adam was alone. Not just at that moment, for the whole week.

They invited him to camp with them.

“I couldn’t live with myself letting him be on his own, so we took him in,” said Ciaran Herniman, one of the group.

That sentence. The simplicity of it. Not “we felt sorry for him” or “we thought it was the right thing to do.” Just: I couldn’t live with myself letting him be on his own. As though the alternative was never really an option.

What He Normally Doesn’t Do

Something happened inside that tent that Adam himself found surprising.

He told them about his autism. He doesn’t normally do that, it’s usually something he keeps to himself, a private fact about how he moves through the world. But around these guys, something felt different.

Ciaran’s response was immediate and exactly right: “We’re all different in our own way. None of us would even think about judging you for that.”

And that was that. The disclosure landed softly, was accepted completely, and life at the festival carried on. Adam had friends to spend the week with. People who made room for him, included him, made sure he wasn’t standing alone at the edge of a crowd watching everyone else have a time.

He sent his dad a message from inside the festival. Andy says he will never forget it.

“I think I’ve found my people.”

The Goodbye

When the festival ended, Adam cried.

Not because it had been hard. Because it had been good, so good that leaving it hurt. He said goodbye to the guys from Bristol and went home carrying something he hadn’t arrived with.

Andy posted on Facebook to thank them. He wrote it for their parents, mostly – strangers who probably had no idea what their sons had done that week. “I’d like to thank these guys from Bristol who befriended my son. You made Adam’s weekend.”

The post spread. Millions of people read it. And what followed was the kind of thing that happens when a story travels to the right people at the right time.

What Came After

Adam is an aspiring DJ. After his story went viral, invitations started arriving – from DJs, from clubs, from people who had seen the video and wanted to give him a stage.

He was booked for gigs. He was invited to join a DJing course through the Pete Tong Academy.

And then Boomtown Fair itself got involved. Luke Mitchell, the festival’s co-founder, said the story had spread through the Boomtown office “with absolute joy.” Adam has now been invited to perform a DJ set at Boomtown in 2027 – the very festival where a group of strangers lent him something to belong to for a week.

He went to his first festival alone. He’ll go back next year as a performer.

The Larger Thing

It would be easy to make this story about what followed – the DJ bookings, the Pete Tong Academy, the Boomtown stage invitation. Those things are wonderful and they deserve to be celebrated.

But the story was already complete before any of that happened. It was complete the moment Ciaran said “we’re all different in our own way” and meant it. It was complete when Adam sent that message to his dad from inside a tent at a festival he almost didn’t go to.

I think I’ve found my people.

That’s the whole thing. A group of guys from Bristol who didn’t know Adam and didn’t have to do anything and did it anyway – made room, made space, made a week feel like belonging. Nobody asked them to. There was no audience for it when it happened. Just a young man with a tent mallet and a group of strangers who looked at him and decided he shouldn’t be alone.

The rest is noise. Beautiful noise, but noise.

The real story is the tent mallet. And what came after it.

His surname means destruction in Hindi. ‘Tabahi’. That’s the name he goes by on social media, the name people know him by, the name that spread across the internet this year attached to videos of a young man standing knee-deep in filth, pulling garbage out of a river with his bare hands.

The name is a joke, of sorts. Or maybe it isn’t. Because Bittu Tabahi did set out to destroy something. Just not what the name implies.

He wanted to destroy the pollution that had swallowed the Ajnar River whole.

What He Found

Surendra Singh Choudhry, aka Bittu Tabahi, is a 20-year-old college student from Biaora in Rajgarh district, Madhya Pradesh, India, pursuing his BSc degree. The Ajnar River runs through his hometown, past a temple he knew well. And the river was in a state that most people had simply stopped seeing.

Plastic bags. Discarded bottles. Religious offerings left to decompose in the water. Algae spreading where the water should have flowed. The water was barely visible beneath the garbage in several stretches.

He was disheartened. And then, instead of staying disheartened, he made a decision.

Republic Day, 2026

On January 26, 2026, while others celebrated Republic Day, Bittu stepped into the river and began cleaning it. He started with almost nothing. No gloves. No boots.

Just himself, the river, and the garbage that had accumulated there for years while everyone waited for someone else to deal with it.

Unlike large-scale government clean-up drives that use machinery, Tabahi’s campaign was almost entirely manual. Armed with basic tools and often working without protective gear, Tabahi entered the polluted river to remove plastic bags, bottles, and algae by hand.

He filmed it. He posted it. And the videos started travelling.

What the River Cost Him

This is the part of the story that sits with you.

The polluted water caused skin infections and irritation on his hands and feet. However, he continued working on the river for months.

No funding. No support from local authorities. Skin infections from the very water he was trying to clean. And criticism – from locals who accused him of doing it for social media attention, of performing kindness rather than practising it.

He kept going anyway. His persistence produced visible results, with before-and-after images shared online showing dramatic improvements in several sections of the Ajnar River.

The river that had been invisible beneath its own garbage started to look like a river again.

Who Noticed

The videos reached people far beyond Biaora.

Mahindra shared Bittu’s story on social media and called him his Monday Motivation. Anand Mahindra, industrialist, one of the most prominent businessmen in India, saw a young BSc student standing in a polluted river without gloves and called him an inspiration to the country.

And then a Dutch CEO reached out with something more concrete: a job offer. “Come work for us,” the message said, a water management company in the Netherlands, recognising in Bittu’s work an instinct for environmental stewardship that most professionals spend years trying to cultivate.

Tabahi’s work has sparked a larger conversation about civic responsibility and local authorities’ roles. Many social media users questioned why an individual had to take on work that local authorities are expected to handle.

It’s a fair question. And it doesn’t have a comfortable answer.

The Larger Thing

There is something in Bittu Tabahi’s story that goes beyond inspiration, something slightly uncomfortable, actually. Because the Ajnar River didn’t become a dumping ground overnight. It got there gradually, one discarded bottle at a time, while everyone who walked past decided it wasn’t their problem.

Bittu didn’t have more resources than anyone else. He didn’t have protective gear, or funding, or official support. He had a river he cared about and the willingness to get into it, literally, and start pulling things out.

His aim has been to destroy pollution and restore a river that had been neglected for years.

Tabahi. Destruction. The name fits after all – just not the way anyone expected.

One young man, a river, and months of quiet work that nobody asked him to do. The Ajnar is cleaner for it. And somewhere in the Netherlands, a CEO looked at those videos and thought: that person understands something important.

He does. He just learned it standing in polluted water without any gloves.

Summer in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, and a group of kids at the Woonsocket Motor Inn had a problem.

Two new friends had just moved into the motel. And unlike everyone else in the friend group, they didn’t have bikes.

No bikes means no freedom. No racing down the hill behind the motel. No keeping up, no joining in, no full membership of a summer that runs on two wheels. The new friends could watch, but they couldn’t really be part of it. Not yet.

Cayden and Nathan noticed. And then they did something about it.

One Dollar at a Time

The plan was simple: set up a stand, sell $1 water bottles and 50-cent ice pops, and don’t stop until there’s enough money for two bikes.

For four days, a group of children stood outside for nearly six hours at a stretch, in the summer heat, selling cold drinks to anyone who passed. Not for themselves. Not for a new toy or a game or anything that would benefit them directly. For two friends who needed wheels.

“We thought of getting them bikes because they didn’t have any and their mom couldn’t afford any, so we decided to help them,” said Christian Blackwood, one of the kids who ran the stand. “We all grouped up and did it together.”

Six hours a day. Four days. A dollar at a time.

What the Community Did Next

The kids raised nearly $100 on their own, enough to make a real dent but not quite enough for two bikes. And then the story started travelling.

The local Boys & Girls Club heard what was happening and donated a girl’s bicycle. An anonymous donor, moved by what these children were doing, surprised them with a bike for the boy.

Just like that, every child in the group had wheels.

Now they spend their summer racing down the hill behind the motel together, instead of taking turns sharing bikes.

That image, a group of kids racing down a hill, no one left behind, is worth sitting with for a second. That’s what all of this was for. Not a headline, not a viral moment, just a summer where everyone gets to ride.

What Ashley Saw

Christian and Tatianna’s mother, Ashley Blackwood, watched the whole thing unfold from the sidelines.

“They had total control of the whole thing,” she said. “I thought it was great. It’s a good feeling for me as a mom knowing that my kids were raised right – that they’d rather do something for someone they know than keep the money for themselves.”

That sentence – they’d rather do something for someone they know than keep the money for themselves – is the quiet parenting triumph at the centre of this story. Nobody told these kids to set up a stand. Nobody assigned them a charity project or gave them a lesson about generosity. They just saw a problem, decided it was solvable, and got to work.

Ashley hopes the ripple effect continues. “I hope this inspires other kids to want to do the same, to help their friends. Maybe it’ll inspire adults too.”

The Larger Thing

Children are often underestimated in stories like this. They’re cast as the beneficiaries of adult kindness – the ones being helped, the ones being protected, the ones who will understand the value of things someday when they’re older.

And then a group of kids in Rhode Island stands outside for six hours a day selling ice pops to buy bikes for friends they’d known for five minutes, and the whole narrative flips.

They didn’t calculate the odds. They didn’t wonder if their $100 was enough, or whether someone else should handle it, or whether it was really their problem to solve. They just looked at their friends standing on the sidelines of summer and thought: that’s not right, and we can fix it.

Summer and childhood, as someone once wrote, always seemed to travel on two wheels.

These kids made sure everyone got to travel together.
