The Importance and Power of Ideas

When I was in school, we were always taught that planning is essential for every business and a new beginning. In fact, the principles of management start with planning. But I think there is something that comes much before planning. Iโ€™m talking about โ€˜ideasโ€™. The importance & power of ideas is much more essential than anything else.

Itโ€™s the ideas behind all the success stories. Planning is just a process in a way of how & when to implement the ideas.

Just think, if planning is that important then why do most successful celebrities or entrepreneurs always say โ€œWe never planned to become an actor, we just ended up here. Weโ€™re blessedโ€.

Even the majority of schools and colleges cornerstone the existing knowledge which is undoubtedly important too.

But what if schools & colleges actually helped students explore their talents and creative ideas instead of putting them follow the same old routine. Wouldnโ€™t it be better? Harvesting and analyzing new unique ideas.

The Power of Ideas

According to me, our actions are based on our initial ideas. Without ideas, planning isnโ€™t made, progress isnโ€™t made, change wonโ€™t happen and everything just stops developing.

Itโ€™s no wonder that most of the things around you, perhaps you are using it right now are based on someoneโ€™s idea. Even the last meme you just saw.

Do you know? Memes were introduced in 1976 by British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his work โ€œThe Selfish Geneโ€. His concept is now trending worldwide and more contagious than any other virus. Theyโ€™ve taken over all the social platforms.

Not only this there are plenty of examples around us. Like when I started to write, I learned a lot of things that I didnโ€™t even know. I learned that a unique concept is necessary to differentiate your work from others and to bring out the best in you. However, thatโ€™s a different story some of my ideas just vanish as soon as I pick up the pen.

Thatโ€™s how a middle-class 16-year-old boy found his way. Neil Patel started working as a trash picker and now he is among the top 100 influencers on the web. He managed to keep up with the idea of putting his efforts and time into SEO for his content to compete with the big guys in the market.

Ideas are everywhere, in people you talk to, in your life experiences, in things you read, in adventure, in music, in books & magazines. The mind is capable enough to produce tons of ideas but only the conscious mind can produce exceptional quality ideas. But in the end, itโ€™s up to you whether to hold them or just let them go.

Thatโ€™s how the world-famous author J.K Rowling came up with the legendary franchise of Harry Potter. She conceived the idea of Harry Potter in 1990 while sitting on a delayed train from Manchester to London Kingโ€™s Cross.

She sat for 4 hrs waiting for that delayed train. She continued to imagine these ideas throughout her journey. Over the next 5 years, she began to map out all 7 books of the series.

Isnโ€™t it amazing? Actually, itโ€™s inspirational how J.K Rowling went from a struggling mother to the worldโ€™s most successful author. Just because of an idea.

You know I love watching science fiction movies. They make me wonder about things that donโ€™t even exist yet. They are the bouquet of brilliant concepts. Movies like Interstellar and Inception by Christopher Nolan are among those. I remember a line from the Inception movie saying that:

โ€œAn Idea is like a virus. Resilient. Highly contagious. And even the smallest seed of an idea can grow. It can grow to define or destroy youโ€

COBB
Scene from the interstellar movie

The thing is everyone wants to be creative. Everyone wants to come up with better ideas and wants to shout EUREKA! EUREKA!. But it isnโ€™t that easy.

It is easy to have ideas but requires a lot of effort & guts to execute them. The idea is unperceivable in our mind which can be seen by our mind only but when we craft it into a perceivable reality, weโ€™ve been creative. Being creative means being capable of seeing beyond.

Role of Ideas in Evolution

Itโ€™s the idea that we have come this far and still going and will continue to go, to evolve, to bring out a better tomorrow. Our future is the fruit of the seed that our minds can produce today. And we should know how to cultivate it. The greatest thing is that the fruit will be for the entire mankind.

This was the case that all the great scientists came up with the ideas, otherwise the entire world would have been limited to its restraining life-cycle.

Role of Ideas in Business

The world is owned by ideas and innovations. Businesses know how much they are fond of innovations to remain in the market. This may be the reason why most companies keep their tagline synonym to the word โ€˜ideaโ€™ or โ€˜innovationโ€™.

An American politician and 35th U.S. President, John F. Kennedy wrote:-

A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on. Ideas have endurance without death

John f. kennedy

Where do great ideas actually come from?

We are doing things all the time now on the internet that we couldnโ€™t have even dreamed of 10 years ago. Itโ€™s all because of innovation and the ideas behind it.

As I said above ideas are everywhere. Our mind uses vacant space to generate ideas. Regular thousands of thoughts come to our minds but most of them are unnecessary and unproductive.

Hereโ€™s why you should avoid overthinking.

Thinking of ideas doesnโ€™t necessarily require you to sit down with pen & paper and force your brain to come up with them. Sometimes it comes spontaneously when you least expect them to.

Optimize and analyze your quality & relevant ideas that generate the greatest impact, which can be achieved through meditation and a disciplined lifestyle.

What is the problem of innovation?

What the internet is doing to our brain? We spend more time searching for othersโ€™ hunches than oneโ€™s own. The Internet is home to existing knowledge.

But think from a different perspective too. Even after the borders make the youth of this world afraid to leap and see beyond, the internet allows us to connect with more and more people to share our creative ideas and combine them to make something even more spectacular.

I suddenly got this urge to work hard in life, not because Iโ€™m ambitious or I want to pursue wealth, but because Iโ€™m scared. I was scared of time slipping through my fingers. And thatโ€™s the complication with being mortal. But anyway, use your time wisely. There is so much to do & explore. Just get the idea!

And remember:

If your degree isnโ€™t making any difference, perhaps one idea can.

  • Excellent post, impressive. Selfish Gene? It is, of course, on my shelf, but on the shelf of of a young person on another continent? Thank you.

    Joanna

  • Inspiring aspiring brilliant piece - thanks for sharing and writing this, phenomenal blog.
Some random thoughts that came up while reading this:
Some people confuse ideas with utopian ideals.
Some ideas want to be shared and could be doable - but oftentimes they are misinterpreted or overinterpreted which renders them undoable - the sad self-sabotage of society as one, as a whole.
Even in darkness, only courage, simplicity and willlingness towards a good vision can help society move forward, and not backwards, break the "moulds".

    • You described it really well.
Utopian ideals is a myth and will always be. But everyone should acquire good vision.

And thank you for this comment.

  • "Our mind uses vacant space to generate ideas. Regular thousands of thoughts come to our minds but most of them are unnecessary and unproductive. This is why you should avoid overthinking."
"I suddenly got the urge to work hard in life, not because Iโ€™m ambitious or I want to pursue wealth, but because I scared. I scared of time slipping through my fingers. "Optimize and analyze your quality & relevant ideas that generate the greatest impact, which can be achieved through meditation and a disciplined lifestyle."

I need to point out a combination (compiled out of the quotes) that is constructive and works:
YES to meditation and discipline NO to overthinking
YES to use your time wisely NO to let it slip away
YES to keep doing (i.e. put your ideas into practice) NO to excuses
YES to keep learning and exploring NO to excuses

    :)

    • Thank you Dubravka for reading this post and this comment.
Of course you said it all right.

I'll always try to say a big 'NO' to all those mentioned Nos.

  • Ritish, great post! I especially like what you said about creativity,"When we craft it (an idea) into a perceivable reality, we're being creative." I think that applies to every human endeavor, whether it be in business, education, science, or the arts...

    All the best!

    • Thank you Cheryl.
Yes I believe its the creative thinking to differentiate you and your work and should apply to every endeavor.

  • Inspiring blog!
And I so agree with your estimation of being fearful of time. Time is the nemesis of us all, and you are correct to have a healthy fear of it, in my opinion, especially of it slipping away. It does, before you know it. Waiting is not an option. We have to act--no matter what it is. :)

    • Yes, absolutely
      Time is a great teacher.
I hope future generations will have access of time.

      Thank you Seliza.

  • Absolutely agree.. a thought (what) is followed by an action(how).. there can't be a plan without an idea.. the world is a better place today because some great people in the past and in the present too had an 'idea'. Hopefully the future will be a better place if this generation comes up with more 'better ideas'
    Love your write up..๐Ÿ‘

  • Wow! I personally believe in first impression is the last impression and reading this is very impressive!

  • I am working on my idea, I want to speak to the millions โ€” what my heart says.

A powerful idea give freedom to a person not bind him ( just clicked in my mind ).

Mein khush hoon, aap ki baaton se khud par or jyada bharosa ho chala hai.

    • I'm happy to know that I hav already commented here.๐Ÿ˜„

Btw your blogs are thoughtful and relevant as always.

Hoping to read more from you guys!

        • Yeah. I'm happy too for returning back.

Well, I was focusing on regular studies and some competitive exams. I spent some time for preparing them.
          I'm still involved there.

But I missed blogging in between.
I prefer to write my thoughts, and hear others also... instead of madly recalling facts one by one.
My health has improved. Physically, mentally and emotionally.. I'm more relaxed and free now.

  • an idea is really something which can change the world...it has the power to make as well as to break....an atom.bomb can destroy everything..while other inventions have been breakthrough in the history of humans....so idea is very powerfull...provided it is applied properly!

    • Well said. Ideas are the fundamental building blocks of all the inventions, theories, literature and everything that humanity able to create using brain power, the place where they conceived the idea of something new.

  • This is a great post and well written, Ritish. You're right, planning follows an idea that needs nurturing. I'm still amazed with J. K. Rowling and how Harry Potter was born. But ideas can make a positive or a negative impact. We need more positive. :) I like the Walt Disney quote, too, as I'm a Disney fan from having Disneyland in my 'backyard' as a child. We've been to the Walt Disney Museum in S.F. and it's interesting and fascinating to read how Disneyland began.
(Wikipedia) "The concept for Disneyland began when Walt Disney was visiting Griffith Park in Los Angeles with his daughters Diane and Sharon. While watching them ride the merry-go-round, he came up with the idea of a place where adults and their children could go and have fun together..." It all began with an idea! Anyway, wonderful post!

    • Thanks so much, Lauren. And I completely agree, we definitely need more positive ideas in the world. I love the story of how Disneyland came to be. Thanks for sharing that! And yes, J.K. Rowling's story is incredibly inspiring too. Ideas really do have the power to change the world.

  • Bravo Ritish for writing this exceptional and impressive as well as educational blog post about exploring ideas๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘‘

Also, in my own view, I believe the world is shaped by ideas and as one wise person once said "No idea is ever right or wrong".

Moreover, I agree with what you said that behind every success story, there was an idea behind it and these ideas actually need support from the people. For example, in the field of business and politics, the best Business Model or Politician is one who is not just educated but one who has a huge support system or following. The reason behind that success or following is the idea that was implemented in this first place.

Lastly, all brands, businesses and educational systems in place that are now reaping big success are enjoying their success due to the ideas knocking on the doors. I remember when me and the other men came together to create a men's classic group that will focus on men's classic styles and sartorial elegant styles and the group was called "THE GLAM LIFE SOCIETY" and it was great because the idea of creating a group in the fashion industry that will inspire and renew men's mindsets to see the value of wearing classic styles because first impressions matter and how a man dresses says a lot about himself and where he is going.

    Very inspiring post brother Ritish๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ™

    • Exactly, ideas are the foundation of success. And I love how you said no idea is ever right or wrong - it's all about perspective and believing in ourselves. I also love your story about Glam Life. I think it's a perfect example of how ideas can bring people together and inspire positive change.
Thanks again for your thoughtful comment, and I'm stoked you enjoyed the post. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ
