Our blogging schedule is all over the place and we find ourselves incapable of carrying it at the moment.

Recently, I had a terrible road accident that was kind enough to offer me the complete bed rest that I was longing for for a while. Additionally, it added a few head stitches, so that my brilliant thoughts won’t find the passage out of my brain. However, it was too much it offered that I didn’t expect.

On the other hand, my blogging friend Deepak got himself surrounded by unwanted circumstances in his career and other essential works that just popped out of nowhere.

And interestingly, both of these things are happening at the same time. Doesn’t it sound weird?

So, if you haven’t found us and our comments hanging around on your blog posts for a while now, know that we are missing it a lot more than you do.

We love blogging and connecting with our readers & amazing bloggers here, but sometimes life gets in the way and we need to take a break. Taking a short break from blogging will help us recharge and come back refreshed, ready to provide even more amazing content! Here’s how 2020 was the weirdest year ever

Well I guess, it is far more than bloody brilliant of what I expected. The things started to get loose. Although the quarantine system was still there and still is, however, there is a much positive outcome this year. Isn’t it?

Ups and downs are always a part of every year’s marathon. There are good & bad days. There are good and bad moments. There are running and groundhog days. There is a stupid and wise of us. So, I won’t complain that this happened, that happened.

How ’bout talking about the good memories, the happy memories we are taking with us to the next year and beyond.

Let’s start with celebrating what we have accomplished this year even if it’s a small achievement.

What mysteries we have solved.

How many smiles we’ve given to others.

How many stars we’ve counted on endless dark nights.

How many unseen paths did we walk on?

How life has changed even if it seems unchanged.

How long we’ve come. How grateful we all are.

How precious life is.

And, how rare and beautiful it is to even exist.

For us, the biggest achievement is that we are still here talking to you.

And I can’t believe we are able to post consistently for the past 2 years. It was just amazing.

The data we’re seeing is just the estimation provided by the officials, it is really horrific to say that the daily cases and death tolls could be a huge undercount. All the hopes, medication, and our preparation don’t seem enough to tackle the second wave and the challenges we are facing now.

I thought that 2021 will be the better year for all of us and it was going through for the first 2 months, cases were declining rapidly every day, the economy was about to get on track again, we just started to breathe freely. But now it is proving me wrong.

Honestly saying, I don’t want to write this and I don’t find anything to write between all this chaos. But however, I feel the urge to write down all the experiences I’m witnessing to let all of you know that what India is going through right now, the situation of covid crisis. The virus is swallowing people in India.

The thing is we weren’t prepared and we didn’t see this coming. With such a massive population it becomes very difficult and challenging to fulfill all of the needs. We’ve run out of medical facilities, oxygen supplies, hospital beds, ventilators, and other medical equipment. There is a shortage of doctors & ambulances. People are dying outside of the hospitals due to the unavailability of beds. Burial grounds & cemeteries are running out of space.

On social media and in television footage, desperate relatives plead for oxygen outside hospitals or weep in the street for loved ones who died waiting for the treatment. If you see the ground reality, it’ll be much more shocking and terrible in all aspects.

This image wrenching the millions of hearts where a woman from Agra, India rescuing her covid positive husband by breathing into his mouth, trying to revive her dying husband through rescue breathing, but he could not be saved despite all the efforts. Read it here.

In another news, an 85-year-old man from Nagpur, India, gave up his bed for a younger Covid-19 patient and said, ‘I have lived my life,’ later dies at home. Read it here.

The news channels and internet is flooded with such kind of news. Images that we are seeing are heartbreaking and beyond belief. I can’t emphasize this more, the situation is getting really bad now. A little cough and cold shaking people to the core.

It’s a shame that during the initial phase of the second spike in cases, my country’s system, political parties, government, responsible authorities & Election commission were all busy conducting elections in West Bengal, India. There were crowded rallies and roadshows going on every day without any fear of spreading the virus and against all covid-19 protocol. Elections being more important now risked the lives of innocent people. But of course, they never had or never will hold responsible themselves for the circumstances that arise.

We are deeply saddened by all the loss. Our condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. We can’t imagine what you must be feeling right now. Words may not suffice to express the heartfelt sorrow that all of us are feeling. We are sorry for your loss. All we can say is to stay strong in these difficult times, battle is still going on.

And thanks to all the Nations & Companies who come forward in these desperate times to offer aid as India battles a deadly second wave of Covid-19. This active response of the world to India’s health emergency is much appreciated.

Some already sent the help in the form of medical equipment supplies, ventilators, oxygen concentrators, cylinders, and other aids. Other Nations promised to send the help soon in the coming weeks. We are all in this together. Helping each other in critical time is what humanity needs the most in today’s world. And a country like India, which has a tremendous capacity to produce vaccines not only for its people but for other countries too, needs to heal from this covid crisis soon.

The only positive news that is quite relaxing to the ears is that people are coming forward, donating and arranging help for each other. Like there is an uncle in my neighborhood who turned his local school van into a hospital bed. There are different people coming up with different ideas so that it somehow helps those who are in need. If you would like you can also donate either to PM Cares Fund or other trustworthy NGOs like AidIndia, GiveIndia, Khalsa Aid India, and others.

The front-line workers are also continuously working day & night despite all the risks involved.

By saying this I remembered a very good line that ‘You step outside you risk your life, you eat you risk your life, you drink you risk your life and nowadays you breathe and you risk your life, it doesn’t matter, we don’t have a choice. The only thing we can choose is what we are risking it for.’

And as I already said that I should not have been writing this, especially in these tough times where we already going through a lot of negativity all around us. But I still write in a hope for better days and that next time we come up with some positive news in our next blog.

The blog isn’t mean to spread any negativity and any more panic, it just means that we still have a long way to go. Be strong and be a responsible citizen. Know your duty towards the nation, wear a mask and stop the spread.

So, this post is going to be different from what we usually do on Aspiring Blog. We want to share our experience of having a self-hosted WordPress site. Why do we migrate to a self-hosted website and what changes do we see after that.

If you are going to start a new blog or a WordPress website then this post might be crucial for you. Having said that let’s jump right into our little story.

A year ago I thought to start a blog to share my thinking & perspective with the world. And for the first time, I heard about WordPress as the best blogging platform out there. I downloaded the WordPress mobile application, built a free website with a free plan, and started writing.

later, I was accompanied by my friend on this blogging journey. After writing around 12 posts in 3 months we realized that it was actually not going the way we wanted to. I mean something was missing.

First of all, our website name was just a subdomain of WordPress.com which of course didn’t feel good.

The only traffic we were getting was from WordPress itself (from other WordPress users) and somewhat from social media where we shared our posts. But the biggest flaw I saw was with the customization features which are very limited with the free plan and literally used by everyone. So, you can’t even make your site unique and stand out in the crowd.

• How to get more views and traffic on WordPress.com?

WordPress.com doesn’t allow you to sell ad space. It runs free ads on all free websites, but that doesn’t make any difference because you’ll not earn even a single penny from it.

Although Google indexed our site as WordPress.com promised. If you are on WordPress Free Plan and your site isn’t showing up on Google yet then here’s what WordPress Happiness Engineers have to say about site indexation-

After seeing all these flaws we dig a little deeper into WordPress.com hosting service. We found out they have five plans to offer which there’s only 1 free plan and the rest are paid including Personal, Premium, Business, and E-commerce plans.

I cannot say much about WordPress.com paid plans because I haven’t used them yet. But I thoroughly read about them before making a decision to go self-hosted.

• WordPress.com will be removed from your domain name.
• Paid plan users can join their advertising program called WordAds and earn a decent amount of money only if they run a high-traffic website. You can also use Affiliate links.
• Only Business or E-commerce plan users can use Google Adsense. It can’t be added to a free, personal, or premium plan site.
• If you want to upgrade to paid plans then you are just a few clicks away, they’ll take care of the rest including backups.
• You don’t have to worry about any technical aspects, they’ll do that for you.

Keeping all this in mind we conclude that all paid plans are offering really advanced and amazing features. But we still found out various flaws like it still won’t give you much control over your site. They can delete your site anytime if they feel you’re violating their terms & policies. Monetization options are very limited.

And, most importantly it still doesn’t feel like ownership.

But you’ll surely have big support from the WordPress team with every aspect as they are providing their hosting service. If you are blogging just for fun or as a student then the free plan might suit you. But if you want to take your content or business to new heights then you need to consider everything.

Why We Migrated to a Self-Hosted Website? (WordPress.org)

Reading more about WordPress.com I found WordPress.org, the real WordPress.

WordPress.org is an open software free for all. Here you just need to buy a domain and need a hosting provider company.

Unlike WordPress.com it gives you much freedom and control over your site. This is the main reason why we migrated to a self-hosted blogging website.

Moreover, it becomes somewhere necessary after some weird glitches which you may have also noticed in your WordPress.com account. Like banning users to follow or comment on other posts. Although they’re just concerned about spamming even the genuine users are getting affected.

Therefore we dropped our previous website built on WordPress.com and built a new one with WordPress.org. Moving away from WordPress.com was a bit chaotic and complicated for us. However the WordPress support team helped us.

We exported our previous posts and followers to our brand-new website. But for the stats, we needed a Jetpack (offered by Automattic) plugin installed on our new website and contacted the WordPress support team to migrate them too. Here’s what the WordPress support team has to say about your old site’s stats if you are moving away from WordPress.com to a WordPress self-hosted site i.e. WordPress.org.

When you choose the self-hosted website you need a domain and hosting. The process of finding the right hosting provider company can be time-consuming, so we’ll make it very simple for you by giving you the best recommendation.

Changes We’re Seeing After Moving To WordPress.org

Now it’s been 8 months for us to have a self-hosted website with WordPress.org. Within these months we noticed major changes. Although it will take some more time to clearly see the benefits. But still, there are some noticeable changes:-

Bigger Outreach

This is the biggest change we are seeing with our posts and pages. We are getting traffic not only from WordPress or social media but from search engines too which are considered to be organic traffic. Here’s the screenshot of our performance in Google search results in the last 3 months-

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Honestly, we haven’t been into SEO much before. However, our limited knowledge of writing SEO content and some amazing plugins like Yoast SEO help us boost our SEO efforts.

Due to this some of our posts are now ranking pretty well in search engines like Google, Bing, Baidu, etc.

Better Monetization Options

If you are thinking of earning from your online content then comparatively WordPress.org has better monetization options. It allows you to join advertising programs like Google Adsense or any other third-party services. You can sell ad space and can also join affiliate programs.

Better Customization Options

WordPress.org allows you to upload custom themes. You can customize and modify your website design that suit your work. You can add any free or paid plugins. It gives you a much-advanced feature to build your site more unique than everybody else.

You Are In Full Control

It is one of the biggest advantages of having a self-hosted website. You own your website. You are in full control. No one can raise a question against your website unless you are doing something illegal.

Better Statistics Using Google Analytics

We are able to track our performance more accurately with powerful tracking tools like Google Analytics. The best thing is you don’t need any developer to embed code. MonsterInsights plugin makes it effortless to properly connect your website with Google Analytics.

Along with Google Analytics, you can also use the Jetpack Plugin to look for your stats, visitors, popular posts, and security features (If you have connected your site to the Jetpack Plugin).

Benefits of WordPress.com

Moving out of WordPress.com hasn’t affected our previous capabilities. We still have the facilities that WordPress.com users have, through Jetpack Plugin. Jetpack is offered by Automattic, the people behind WordPress.com.

We are able to connect with the WordPress community because we believe WordPress is the best community we have. We really like reading other perceptions and thinking.

Challenges of Having a Self-Hosted Website

As I said, you have to buy a domain and need web hosting which will obviously cost you. Thankfully, Bluehost offers a free domain for the first year.

As it is said – With great powers comes great responsibilities. Here are some challenges that you’ll face after opting for a self-hosted WordPress website:-

• You need to work harder and consistently to see the results as you own a website.
• You need to make your posts and pages more competitive and of high quality.
• As you have a bigger reach, you are in the eye of Google and other search engines, therefore the responsibilities are big now.
• With the time you’ll start earning from your content, only then you can cover all your initial costs.
• As the site grows so does the cost of maintaining it, but with time your earning also increases to cover your expenses.
• You have to find the optimum way to make your site user-friendly.
• Even if you are not a technical person, still you have to face those difficulties. You own a site so it’s very common to have technical errors.
• You are responsible for site backups and your site security.
• You may feel demotivated sometimes, it’s up to you how you take these challenges. The WordPress support team or forums may help you sometimes.

Everything that started for a reason later turned into something else (like evil) or sometimes completely disappeared. So, is the same happening with democracy too? Is democracy really dying?

As time flows things never remain the same, a new generation, a new representative of the public, a new government, new perspectives, and new laws (some are beneficial for the public but some are just a threat to the democracy) makes everything worse to worsen. The term Democracy is itself changing rapidly. I will try to illuminate how?

Before we go any further let us have a look at the meaning and brief History of Democracy.

What Is Democracy?

Democracy is a form of government in which peoples have the power to choose the legislature and their representative, people choose their government by using their voting rights in which only eligible voters (above 18 years old) can vote.

In a democratic country, people can exercise their power to choose their representative or ruling Government directly or indirectly through a system involving periodic free elections. It is a democratic system of government.

India and United States are known to be the two largest democratic countries in the World.

Why Democratic Country Needs a Constitution?

The constitution helps in making rules and regulations and principles of a country. In a Democracy, every citizen enjoys the basic right, so on that grounds, the constitution helps citizens to use fundamental rights like freedom, expression, speech, etc. The constitution helps in setting values that should be followed by its law-abiding citizens.

Democracy is further classified on the basis of political freedom or mixed monarchies and dictatorship. This include –

1. Full Democracies
2. Flawed Democracies
3. Hybrid Regimes
4. Authoritarian Regimes

A Brief History of Democracy

Democracy has a vast history but we will not go in-depth, the term Democracy originated from ancient Greek political and philosophical thought in the city-state of Athens during classical antiquity. In the word Democracy, ‘demos’ mean common people and ‘Kratos’ strength.

Cleisthenes, also known as the Father of democracy, was an ancient Greece that came into power with the support of the Athenian people. Athenians established what is generally held as the first democracy in 508-507 BC.

Different Types of Democracy

There are two major types of Democracy –

• Direct Democracy:- It is a form of Democracy where people govern directly. It requires the wide participation of citizens in politics. It also is known as pure democracy. These nations seem to have only limited problems in their democratic functioning.
• Representative Democracy:- It is an indirect democracy where Sovereignty is held by the people’s representatives. Electoral Democracy, Dominant party System, parliamentary Democracy (popular in India), Presidential Democracy, and Jacksonian Democracy (a variant of presidential democracy popular in the USA) are the types of Representative Democracy.

As of now, there are two major Democracies one is considered to be the superpower and another one is the largest Democracy in the world. The USA is considered the superpower nation of the world and can exert influence or project power on a global scale.

Whereas, India or Hindustan, or Bharat is known for its walk with everyone’s motto and secular country. If the USA has the largest economy then India has the largest variety of cultures, and rituals are among the most diversified countries in the world, and of course known for its population and colorful history.

But in-ground reality where do both these countries stand in terms of the level of democracy?

Every democratic country needs a strong constitution that clearly defines the fundamental rights, freedom, legitimized rights, liberties, and security of their citizen so that no dominant group can exercise its power against less powerful groups. As I said above the meaning and perspective of democracy are changing rapidly. This new generation is more into politics. They know when their rights are overruled by these giants or greedy politicians.

I recently noticed some grounds where I think that the basic concept of democracy is dying and its constitution is really counting its last breath. I also agree that many of you will not agree with my perspectives and why I said and think that democracy or freedom to express one’s thoughts is soon going to be overruled. For me, this is what is going on in my country and perhaps yours too.

Here are the 5 grounds Where Democracy is Dying

1. Elections
2. Security
3. Media
4. Equality
5. Healthcare

Elections

Elections are the most awaited time for delegates and citizens. If the United States has to wait every 4 years so India has to wait for 5 years. Every citizen has a hope that this time will be different and newcomers will make a good change. An election is a process through which a citizen can exercise their power of the vote to select a favorable candidate. but wait! Here’s the biggest twist.

There is presidential democracy in the United States where two major parties (Democratic & Republic) have their candidate for presidential posts and there is a long process behind that, but if there is democracy so why the citizens cannot elect their representatives? Why do the representatives make the choice or prefer only that community where there is a chance of vote? Why did only powerful and rich men get a chance for a presidential post?

Same as in India there are plenty of parties but the major ones are Indian National Congress (INC), and the Ruling Bhartiya Janta party (BJP). If we go through the background of the politicians, the majority have a criminal record, are millionaires, and are uneducated. So where is the Democracy?

Why don’t we have the power to choose the right candidate? Why the common people have become just a voting machine for them?

Security

We all have the right to live and freedom of speech as per the constitution, and the law is there to protect us from threats and injustice that happens to us, but that security is only in the books of the constitution or perhaps we didn’t understand this concept completely.

A report suggests that there are less than 20% of people today can say that they trust their government.

There are 106 rape occurs in India and in every 15 minutes one woman becomes a victim of a rapist, and a majority of the cases don’t even report.

Whereas in the USA, having a license for a gun is easier than having a green card. By the end of 2019, there were 417 mass shootings happened in the United States.

CBS News wrote:- “There were more mass shootings than days in 2019”

In the Year 2020 graph of ‘shooting a person’ declined, just because of the coronavirus lockdown. So where is the right of citizens to live freely?

Media

This is the fourth pillar of democracy and the most important part of democracy, the whole country trusts the media more than the government. Media works or I can say ‘had worked’ to present the reality and true picture of what is going on in the country.

But now it is all just a TRP game. They become business-minded, but anyway they are corporates too. For me, the media is losing the trust we had in them. Now we have to search for each and every piece of news from different sources for its authenticity.

We are bound to do this, we can’t just stick to a particular source for trust reasons. Now you can see why people get teed off at the media. Media plays an important role in political influence in the country and the fact is they are really enjoying that.

Instead of loving people and using money, people often love money and use people

The above quote is appropriate for the Indian media that greed has stirred truth and has far removed citizens from their rights. Once Rusty Eric said “as long as Greed is stronger than compassion, there will always be suffering” and exactly the citizens are suffering.

The media never shows what is true. They are too busy telecasting useless debates and inappropriate news and competing in their industry.

Whose fault is this? The government? Media? Or us? who still watching and trusting them.

Equality

When we talk about equality there can be a lot to discuss but in the very short term, equality means, equal rights for all. There is no discrimination on the basis of caste, race, gender, or religion. The constitution is built to protect equal rights.

However, no one could ever imagine that political influence can even amend these constitutions accordingly which makes it easy for their own rules and capital. Everything will be forgotten after winning the elections whether it is George Floyd in America or Casteism in India.

Healthcare

The true picture of Healthcare facilities has been shown during the coronavirus period. If one country has the most expensive healthcare system so another one expends only 1% of GDP on healthcare facilities.

Of course, India ranks 145 among 195 countries in terms of healthcare facilities. And with the most expensive healthcare, the USA ranks 7 among the 195 countries.

Despite the largest economy and the largest democracy, we don’t have equality in terms of health benefits, so don’t you think democracy is dying? In India, patients lack basic needs like ambulances, stretchers, emergency wards, and medicine, and in the USA if these things are available then because of the expensive healthcare systems, it is unaffordable for middle and lower-class people despite paying huge taxes.

Salaries of Americans have risen but net pay remains the same due to increasing charges of health insurance. Why the healthcare expenditure in the United States?

Democracy was incorporated so that we could elect the right Representative for the country but we have just become slaves to powerful people’s business model.

As I said above everything that started for a reason later turned into something evil. For instance, the Feminist movement that has started to protect and provide equal rights to women and empower them by giving them equal opportunities as a man has too turned into something else. How?
