The Readers Who Made It Feel Real

This year, more than 12,000 readers found their way to Aspiring Blog. From 168 countries.

That number still catches us off guard because it represents people we’ll probably never meet, choosing to spend a few minutes with words written by someone they don’t know personally. In a world overflowing with noise, that choice means something.

Together, you spent over 46,000 minutes reading.
And that’s the equivalent of watching a two-hour movie more than 380 times – except instead of screens and soundtracks, it was quiet moments, pauses between paragraphs, and thoughts lingering a little longer than expected.

We have published 280,000+ words so far. Some flowed easily. Some took days to finish. Some were rewritten more times than we’d like to admit. Those words led to 2,200+ comments and 6,600+ likes – conversations, disagreements, encouragement, and the occasional “I never thought of it this way.”

The Little Details That Meant a Lot

And strangely enough, we noticed patterns that felt oddly human.
Tuesdays turned out to be our most-read day (17.16% of views), and 6 PM became the hour when most of you showed up. Maybe it’s after work. Maybe after dinner. Or, maybe just a moment of quiet before the day ends. Whatever the reason, we were there together.

Now, years later, you can’t even remember what the conversation was about. Or the time you were convinced your college grades would define your future, only to realize the person who barely passed accounting is now running their own business and you can’t remember where your mark sheet even is.

Or maybe it was the “big fight” with a friend that had you rehearsing comebacks in the shower for weeks, only for the two of you to eventually laugh about how dramatic you were.

It’s ridiculous how serious everything feels in the moment. But give it a few years (or even a few months) and the same events that once made you panic become your favorite stories to tell at dinner. What once made you cry now makes you laugh. It makes you wonder, if we’re destined to laugh about it later, maybe we can start laughing a little sooner.

Every Crisis Has an Expiry Date (and Becomes a Story Later)

There’s this strange thing about time – it doesn’t change what happened, but it changes how we see it.

Think about your “worst day ever” from five or ten years ago. The one that made you swear life was out to get you. Maybe you were fired, dumped, embarrassed, or broke. You thought you’d never recover. And yet here you are – alive, wiser, possibly sipping coffee, and able to tell that story like a stand-up comic.

I think, time doesn’t just heal — it edits. It trims the emotional chaos, adds a bit of irony, and leaves you with a surprisingly funny story. The pain fades, the absurdity stays.

That’s the beautiful cruelty of it, the moment feels serious only because we’re living it in real time. Give it a little distance, and you start seeing the humor in how dramatic we humans can be.

The Universe Has a Dark Sense of Humor

Sometimes I think the universe is secretly running a long-form comedy show and we’re all just characters learning our lines on the spot. Ever noticed how life has impeccable timing?

Lose your keys? They were in your hand the whole time.
Missed your bus? That’s the day your ex happens to drive by.
Spend weeks preparing for a presentation? The projector dies five minutes in.

There’s an unmistakable irony in how life plays out. The more we try to control the script, the funnier it gets. Maybe the universe isn’t that cruel. Maybe it’s just trying to make us laugh, and here we are – keep missing the joke.

The Ego Is a Terrible Comedian

The reason we take things so seriously is because our ego thinks everything is about us. It whispers, “Everyone’s watching you. Everyone’s judging.” That awkward thing you said in a meeting? You think everyone remembers, they don’t. They were too busy worrying about their own awkward moments. Your “big failure”? In someone else’s story, you were just a background character walking by with coffee.

The day you realize that not everyone is watching you – you’re free. You can start living a little lighter, talking a little bolder, and laughing a lot sooner. The ego hates it, but your peace of mind loves it.

When You Can Laugh at It, You’ve Already Won

People often mistake humor for denial, but it’s actually awareness in disguise. Laughing at something painful doesn’t mean you’re denying it. It means you’ve stepped far enough back to see the bigger picture.

That’s why the wisest people are often the funniest. They’ve seen enough absurdity to realize that life rarely goes according to plan, and instead of resisting it, they learned to dance.

The “Five-Year Rule” That Saves Sanity

Here’s a simple trick I try to remember: whenever something feels too heavy, I ask myself, “Will this still matter in five years?”

If the answer is no, I remind myself that I’m probably inside a temporary storm that feels infinite only because I’m standing in the middle of it. And if the answer is yes, then I know this is something to face calmly, not dramatically — because serious things need clarity, not chaos.

It’s strange how simply pausing to ask this question can shrink a problem down to its real size. It turns out, most of what we call “crises” are just exaggerated moments of fear. In five years, we’ll call them “character development.”

Make Humor a Habit

People think some are “born funny.” I don’t buy that. Humor is a habit, its a way of noticing life’s odd details instead of reacting to them. It’s not about cracking jokes; it’s about seeing irony in the everyday.
A year ago, I wrote a piece about how humor can be your sixth sense, where I discussed how your sense of humor can makes you stand out in thr crowd. It is like an additional skill that you acquire naturally, genetically, or even perhaps forcefully.

So, what I’m saying is that you can actually train yourself to find humor in chaos. Next time you spill coffee, miss a flight, or embarrass yourself, try narrating it like a stand-up comedian in your head. (“So there I was, trying to look professional, with latte art all over my shirt…”)

Laughter shifts your perspective. It turns problems into anecdotes and mistakes into wisdom. It’s the most affordable therapy out there.

Life’s Punchlines Always Arrive Late

The best punchlines in life rarely come on time. Sometimes it takes months or years before you get the joke. The heartbreak that once shattered you now makes you grateful for the lessons it carried. The rejection that stung later turns out to be a redirection to something far better. The mistakes that once made you cringe become the very things that give your story flavor and depth.

I find it funny, that the things we most wanted to avoid are often the things that built us. Life, in its odd sense of humor, doesn’t give you what you want; it gives you what you’ll laugh about later.

Maybe the secret isn’t to stop taking life seriously, but to start taking its comedy more seriously. Everything you’re panicking about today, or at this particular point in time, is probably just another setup for a future story that begins with, “You won’t believe what happened…”

So laugh a little sooner. Find the absurd in the chaos. Treat your problems like characters in a sitcom you’re starring in – not villains out to get you. Because the truth is, no one gets out of this life with all the answers, but those who learn to laugh along the way tend to enjoy the ride a lot more.

The rain was pelting down in rural Ireland on this cold November day. Temperatures were in single digits. It was their last full day in their house, a home they’d lived in for twenty years. Twenty very happy years. Tomorrow the house would exchange hands, with new owners moving in, making it their own. They’d fill the space with their own things, slowly making the house their home.

Now, the couple scurried around, packing up the last bits, hoping everything would fit into storage and into the car in which they would embark on their journey. The ferry to Spain would leave the following day, taking them to their new life, a life they had been planning for a while now.

A last glance around the house, stuffing the last items into spaces that didn’t really exist. The rooms echoed now, smelling faintly of dust and old paint, the warmth of twenty winters reflecting from the walls.

Locking up for the last time and driving off. Emotions flipping rapidly between elation and sadness. Excitement and trepidation. Fear of the unknown future, excited about its prospects.

After watching the van being packed up outside the storage, finally they were en route to the ferry. The wipers squealed against the glass, rain hammering so loud it drowned out the radio. It was easy to get distracted with so much occupying the mind. Eyes on the road, easy on the throttle. Don’t skid.

“We’re really doing this,” she whispered to herself, sitting in the passenger seat, watching the rain rush by through the window.

Thirty-six hours at sea, with nothing to do except let the body and mind relax. The ferry groaned with every swell, salt and diesel hanging in the air. They sipped bitter coffee, bodies aching, finally still. The whole body hurt after carrying so many boxes, moving so many things. A well-needed rest.

Off the ferry, onto new shores. Google Maps as company, expertly guiding them on the long road journey ahead.

Six hours later, a new town, new temporary accommodation. From a five-bedroom house, into a two-bedroom apartment. All belongings are in storage. That would come out later.

From living in the countryside to living in the middle of a town. From nothing on your doorstep to everything on your doorstep. Time to acclimatize.

House hunting next. There were some prospects, some appointments previously made.

First house a disappointment, it’s amazing what you can do with pictures. You can’t smell, nor really see the damp through pictures. Yet.

Onto the next one. Wow! What a view. Let’s buy it.

Offer accepted. Let the process begin.

Frustration.

Finally, the deal is done. Boxes ticked. Keys handed over.

Let’s get all that stuff out of storage and turn this new house into a home.

The keys were cold in their palms, but outside the sun was warm, cicadas humming in the trees.

Time to live again.

Emigrating is like writing: you pack up what matters, leave behind what you think doesn’t, and trust that the next page will hold something worth reading. Every emigrant’s journey is also a story — one of letting go, embracing uncertainty, and writing a new chapter.

What does it mean to be truly at home? That’s something I have been pondering since the day I left my childhood home.

I was born and raised in a solid, caring family in a small Finnish town. One of the few towns where Swedish remains the majority language. Only about five percent of Finns speak Swedish as their native language, but in my hometown the figure was over 80 percent. That meant that I learnt Swedish and Finnish from an early age.

Early on, though, I had an urge to see something more. Something more than my hometown. That happened later, thanks to a chance encounter online. One Friday evening, feeling restless in my bachelor pad, I wandered online and into a chat room.

I met a girl from Ireland, and we hit it off. A few months later, I had packed up my life and was on a ship sailing towards Ireland. That’s when part two of my life began, and the part where I got to see the world.

After securing a job with an international software company, I quickly advanced in my career and eventually became responsible for a global team. That meant travelling a lot, and I loved it. I loved seeing the places, meeting the people and learning from it all. It was very different from the small corner of Finland I had known only a few years earlier.

Life in Ireland was good to me. A real learning experience. I married the girl whom I met online. We bought a house, and her daughter soon gave us a grandchild. Life was fantastic.

But as they say, nothing lasts forever. Layoffs hit the industry, and suddenly I found myself job hunting. After a few months I found a job, one that turned out didn’t suit me, so I left. Otherwise, I would have suffered too much mentally.

Perhaps that was what pushed my wife and me to decide that we should try something else, somewhere else. We had talked about moving to Spain, so we started exploring that option. Being a couple of action, we soon had sold our house in Ireland. We packed the car with the essentials, sent the rest in a van, and boarded the ferry for Spain.

First, we rented a small apartment in a bustling old town with everything on our doorstep. It was a complete contrast to our previous life in a large house in the countryside in Ireland. Different, but refreshing, and we adapted while we kept house hunting. Our efforts soon bore fruit, and we found a house with great views, sitting on a hillside off the Mediterranean coast, and we quickly sealed the deal.

The sun was generous, the pool inviting, and for a time we believed we had found our place. As with any relationship or place, the glow of the beginning eventually fades, revealing the cracks beneath.

Right now, we are not sure. Should we stay here in Spain or move? Perhaps back to Finland. My wife is Irish, but we don’t consider Ireland a viable option right now. There is a reason we moved away, and it was not just the lure of the sun. It was deeper than that, rooted in the societal transformation we witnessed.

So we shall see. To be honest, I’ve not been homesick since I left Finland, until now. For some reason, exploring the possibilities of moving back has ignited the most intense wave of homesickness I’ve ever experienced. Perhaps it’s my age. I honestly don’t know. It’s come as a surprise.

What all this has taught me though is that for me, a home is more than a physical place. It’s the people you share it with. The society around it and how well you integrate into it. 

I’ve always felt at home, wherever I am  — in Finland, in Ireland and here in Spain too, to some extent. 

I’ve made a lot of friends wherever I’ve lived, including in the relatively short time we’ve lived here. That helps to feel at home, but for some reason, it feels like something is missing this time. I can’t put my finger on it. Perhaps the fact that I’ve not secured a job has left me unchallenged, and it has not allowed me to integrate into society as much as I would have hoped.

Life is a journey, and my journey has been a good one so far. I’ve learned a lot, experienced a lot. Perhaps because, as I mentioned, I am a man of action and quick decisions. I don’t hesitate when I’ve made up my mind, and I consider that a strength.

Where my journey will take me next is a mystery, thankfully. Back to Finland, or somewhere unexpected. Wherever it is, I am confident that my courage and life experiences will help me adapt.

Home isn’t a dot on a map or a physical place. It’s the people and the connections you make, and above all, the courage to keep moving forward.

Schools focus on getting good grades and getting a degree, but they don’t teach us how to actually live. It’s like they take all these unique kids and try to squash them into the same mold. Imagine if schools actually helped kids find their strengths instead, like letting them explore art, music, and sports alongside math and science. Wouldn’t that be amazing?

Unfortunately, most of our schools were pretty traditional. We just studied from books and took tests. The real lessons came later, from dealing with life’s ups and downs. I learned how to keep going when things get tough, to understand other people’s feelings, and to bounce back from problems. It took a lot of work, although I’m still figuring out who I am and what I want. I’m still learning the essential life skills that nobody actually taught me.

The science behind learning life skills is fascinating. Human brains are incredible; they’re always changing and growing, especially when we learn new things. The more we practice something, the better we get at it. That’s why it’s important to learn life skills early on when our brains are most flexible.

Life skills help us feel good and build strong relationships. They make us smarter about making choices and dealing with stress. Basically, life skills are the building blocks for a happy and successful life.

So, here are a few life skills that nobody actually taught us, I think:

1. There’s a Difference Between Being Alone and Being Lonely

A few years back, I had a conversation with one of my long-lost friends. It had been around 9 years since we saw each other. We talked for a while, and the story he told me upset my mind. Within these years, he’s gone through a lot. In between the conversation, he controlled his tears and said:

“Being Lonely is the worst thing in anyone’s life. It feels like you’re drowning in an ocean of your own self-judgment and hate, and every time you pull yourself up to breathe, another wave washes over you. There are a lot of people around you but yet no one holds your hand to bring you to the shore.”

That conversation stuck with me, and it made me realize that I had been confusing being alone with being lonely for a long time. I had thought that being alone meant being lonely, but my friend’s words made me see the difference. Being alone is a state of physical solitude, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re feeling sad or disconnected. You can be alone and still feel fulfilled, content, and even happy.

On the other hand, loneliness is an emotional state of feeling disconnected, isolated, and unheard. You can be surrounded by people and still feel lonely, just like my friend described. It’s a feeling of being adrift, without a sense of belonging or support.

2. It is Good to Leave Your Comfort Zone

When you find your comfort zone and stay so long within that, you might be missing something. That cozy little bubble where everything feels familiar and safe? Yeah, it’s great to hang out there sometimes, but the thing is, it can also get pretty limiting. I mean, think about it – if you never leave your comfort zone, you’ll never really know what you’re capable of.

Now, I’m not saying you should constantly be pushing yourself to the edge (although let’s be real, sometimes that’s necessary too). But what I am saying is that finding a balance between comfort and discomfort is key. It’s like, you need a little bit of both to really grow and learn.

Some people are lucky enough to grow up trying lots of different things. But for most of us, we gotta push ourselves a bit to step outside our comfort zones. It can be scary, but it’s also where the fun and growth happen. So, don’t be afraid to get a little uncomfortable. It’s okay to feel scared or nervous – that’s just your comfort zone trying to hold you back.

3. Use Your Leisure to Create, Not Conceal

Tell me, how do you usually spend your leisure time? A lot of us use that time to chill out and forget about our daily grind. That’s totally fine! But what if we could use that time to actually build the kind of life we want? For example, if you’re stuck in a corporate job but want to be a writer, maybe spend your evenings writing or taking a writing course or perhaps start writing a book. It might not feel like much at first, but small steps can lead to big changes.

The point is, your leisure time is precious. Don’t just use it to escape the present – use it to build the life you want.

4. Procrastination Isn’t Always a Bad Thing

Procrastination is usually seen as a bad thing, but in my opinion, it isn’t. Procrastination isn’t always a productivity killer. In fact, it can be a useful tool…if you use it intentionally. Think about it, sometimes putting things off can help you focus on what really matters.

It’s okay to leave some tasks for tomorrow if it means you’re tackling the important stuff today. So, don’t beat yourself up over not getting everything done. Just prioritize, focus, and use procrastination to your advantage. It’s all about balance.

5. Advice is just Advice

Everyone’s got advice, right? We’ve all been there – someone’s telling us what to do, and we’re like, “Okay, got it”. But the thing is: advice is just advice. It’s based on someone else’s experiences and might not work for you. That’s because we’re all unique, with different situations and stages of life.

So, take advice for what it is – a perspective. Listen, consider, and then decide what works best for you. Don’t feel pressured to follow someone else’s path just because it worked for them. You do you.

6. Money Can Buy You Happiness

Okay, I know this is a hot topic and many of you would disagree. The fact is, money can actually bring happiness, but it’s all about what you use it for. If you know what makes you happy, money can help you get those things. It’s not about being rich, but about covering your basics and enjoying some extras.

Think about it, money can buy experiences, memories, and moments that make life worth living. It’s not the only thing that matters, but it can definitely contribute to happiness. So, those who say “money is just a scum of hand”, Perhaps are either rich or haven’t faced the harsh reality of the world yet.

7. You Might Be Smarter Than You Think

It’s funny how it works, right? People who aren’t so smart often think they’re geniuses, while the really smart ones doubt themselves. It’s like the opposite of what you’d expect. Sometimes, smart people think, “If it’s easy for me, it must be easy for everyone else.” But that’s just not true.

This is called the Dunning-Kruger effect, basically, it means that people who don’t know much tend to overestimate their abilities, while those who know a lot tend to underestimate theirs. So, next time you’re feeling unsure about yourself, remember: you might be smarter than you think.

8. Prioritise Family & Me Time

It’s awesome to be good at your job, but don’t forget about the people who matter most – your family! Balancing work and family life is tough, but it’s super important. So, while it’s great to be productive, make sure you’re also making time for the people you love and for yourself. After all, what’s the point of all that hard work if you can’t enjoy it with your family?

9. Write Every Day

Everyone’s got stories to tell. Writing is a great way to get those ideas out of your head and onto paper. It’s like exercising your brain and letting your imagination run wild. It is one of those life skills that I admire deeply. Don’t worry about making sense or being perfect, just let your imagination run wild. You might be surprised at what you come up with.

If you do not already know, it is scientifically proven that writing affects how your brain works. I’ve been writing for over 4 years, and after writing several articles or blogs, I have a positive outlook and a kinda divergent perspective of seeing the situation.

10. Saying Sorry is a Strength, Not a Weakness

Saying sorry isn’t about being wrong; it’s about caring more about the person than your pride. A simple “sorry” can save a relationship. So, swallow your ego and give it a try. If you never try, you’ll never know how a sincere apology with a smile can work wonders.

11. Balance is Beautiful

Want to know the secret to a happy life? It’s all about balance. Just like a perfect recipe, you need a dash of everything in moderation. Not too much, not too little – just the right amount. Whether it’s work, play, exercise, relationships, or even laughter and happiness, all you need is just find that sweet spot. So, enjoy everything in moderation and live your best life.

12. Know the Significance of the Word ‘Life’

Life is actually pretty incredible if you just sit for a while and think about it. Like, really stopped to think about it? You’ll perhaps realize how rare and beautiful it is to even exist. There’s so much beauty and wonder in the world, from tiny flowers to distant galaxies.

It’s a crazy, beautiful adventure, and we’re lucky to be a part of it. I’ve spent countless nights staring through my telescope, and it just blows my mind. Only my telescope and I know how many wonders we’ve seen together. To be honest, it isn’t even a life skill but more of a self-awakening one.

13. It’s Ok to Talk Less

It’s OK to talk less, I’m an introvert, but I know the where, what and how of talks. So it isn’t any shortcoming.

14. Social Awkwardness Doesn’t Mean You’re Mad

There’s nothing wrong with being socially awkward. In fact, it is awesome. No one is perfect; it’s an illusion. People who behave differently don’t aim for perfection in a public place; they don’t focus too much on how to stand, how to walk perfectly, how to talk, how to sit, etc. They just strive for excellence in what they are more curious about. And, I think it’s a good thing to do.

Life’s a wild adventure, and we’re all just figuring it out as we go. Remember, it’s okay to not have all the answers. The journey is as important as the destination.

Maybe it was that time you offered a kind word to a stranger who seemed off that day. Or when you stayed up all night listening to a friend who was quietly falling apart. Perhaps it was just a smile, a small gesture, or an act so tiny you don’t even remember it.

But they do.

The Things We Forget, Others Remember

I once read a story about a man who was about to take his own life. He had written a note:

If one person smiles at me today, I won’t do it.

Someone did. He lived.

The stranger who smiled at him probably never thought about it again. To them, it was just another day. But to him, it was the moment that saved his life.

And that’s what I keep thinking about: How many of us are walking around completely unaware that we’ve changed someone’s life?

Heroes in the Smallest Moments

Not all heroes wear capes. Some just hold the door open when someone’s hands are full. Some tip the exhausted waitress a little extra. Some stand up for the kid who always eats lunch alone. Some send a late-night “Hey, thinking of you” message that arrives at the exact right time.

We don’t think of these things as heroic. But what if we’re wrong?

What if, in someone’s story, we are the hero?

What if the words we said in passing became the reason someone held on just a little longer?

You Are Part of Someone’s Story

I think we often underestimate our impact. We assume that to be a hero, you need to do something grand, something newsworthy, something loud. But what if the quiet, unnoticed moments matter the most?

What if someone, right now, is telling a friend about that one time you unknowingly saved them?

And here’s the most incredible part: You’ll probably never know.

But maybe you don’t need to. Maybe it’s enough to just keep being kind, just in case.

The Stories We Need to Tell

The world is full of these hidden moments. The problem is that we don’t talk about them enough. We don’t celebrate them. We don’t tell those stories.

And that’s why I’ve spent years writing about people who changed the world without ever making the headlines. People who didn’t think they were extraordinary. People who just chose to do the right thing when it mattered most.

And that’s exactly why I’m beyond excited to share our latest book, Unfold the Stories of Unsung Heroes Part III, with you. Because it’s filled with these stories, the ones that remind us that ordinary people are capable of extraordinary things.

And before the official launch, I want to give you a first look at the book cover!

I don’t know about you, but I cannot fathom comparing myself to any of the amazing heroes listed above. So, where does that leave the rest of us? Where does that leave me? Have I done anything to change or make the world a better place?

What Creates a Hero?

What creates a hero with the ability to make major changes and improvements in the world? Nelson Mandela had a deep spirituality that was rooted in his Methodist beliefs. In prison, Mandela’s faith flourished, and he developed a sense of community. Although he was private about his religious views, his spirituality was a core part of his character. Mother Teresa embraced her “dark night of the soul” as a part of her spiritual journey and a way to identify with Christ’s suffering. She believed that the darkness prepared her for a deeper union with God and compassion for the poor.

George Washington (Known as The Father of America) was a devoted member of the Anglican Church but was supportive of other faiths. In 1762, Washington became a vestryman in Truro Parish, overseeing the affairs at Pohick Church. He served as a churchwarden for three terms, helping to care for the poor. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist Pastor and inspired by Mahatma Gandhi.

Mahatma Gandhi experienced a spiritual awakening in South Africa. This awakening led him to adopt a nonviolent approach to fighting injustice. The Apostle Paul who wrote most of the New Testament certainly had a spiritual awakening with God which grew stronger, even while in prison. Paul’s “God Inspired” writings have brought spiritual rebirth to literally billions of lives.

Contemplation

As the day of my retirement approached, I contemplated these things and what, if anything I had accomplished with the life given to me.

Deciding first, to be thankful.

Blessed is the person living in a country with the opportunity to work for a lifetime and be free, while realizing that many do not have these same opportunities.

Second, should retirement really be a destination?

Is it the ultimate goal? I thought it was mine until losing Elizabeth; known as “Liz” by all who knew her. I realized that retirement was always “our goal” together not mine alone. We had been married since high school and our marriage spanned 48 years. My unconditional love for her continues today and will never cease. I have been told this is not “healthy.” People can judge me, I don’t care. After all, I may not be healthy. LOL!

Third, reviewing the workplace.

I began my working life in construction and Liz became a realtor. We often worked multiple jobs at the same time, but we were very young, so we easily found time to have our three wonderful children. Liz remained in real estate while I spent the next 17 years in the auto trade. In 1996 I began working in healthcare facility construction during which time Liz was diagnosed with MS and was forced to resign in 2006. She would fight the disease valiantly until it took her from me in 2017.

The day after her “celebration of life” service was a Sunday, so I attended the small church she had repeatedly urged me to attend with her, but I would never go or even take her. I have been serving in church since that first Sunday and have dedicated my life to serving God.

During my “contemplation” of life, I couldn’t help but think of the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” We all know that story; George Baily decides to end his life believing there had been no value or meaning to his existence. Clarence the Angel saves his life and shows him how terrible others’ lives would have been without him.

All We Need is Love

So, maybe we cannot all be superheroes, with our names honored in history books, or change the world. Maybe ours is a group effort, a collaboration. No matter your audience or circle of influence, we all matter. Being a responsible citizen matters, and being a good parent makes a huge difference in your children’s lives. Being a hard worker is much more valuable than being a lazy worker.

Giving to charity, church outreach programs, donations, working as a volunteer, helping and just giving of yourself, it all matters.

Everyone will know what’s truly in your heart by the love you show for others. Setting a good example is priceless. Good character cannot be purchased. Such things are the traits of a hero making a difference. I have not noticed a real hero taking sole credit for their heroic accomplishments, quite the contrary; The brave soldier receiving a medal always gives credit to others. Billy Graham gave glory only to God. Nelson Mandela gave credit to the women and children of S. Africa. The apostle Paul gave all credit to God, as do I.

Epilog

I’ve been retired only two weeks as I write these words, but I can offer these thoughts: I don’t believe retirement should be a goal, but it is wise to be prepared if possible. Make sure you are living life along the way because the best-laid plans will change, sometimes drastically.

I thank God for getting me this far because everyone does not have the opportunity or make it to retirement so don’t miss out on life along the way…

2024 witnessed numerous events, some of which were devastating and shook the world. However, the year also brought forth beautiful memories that we hope to carry into 2025.

So, here is the list of major events that happened in 2024 that shaped the year and our lives.

Major Events Happened in 2024 Worldwide

1. Major Political Shifts

Politics is one thing which never remains stagnant. It keeps remain changing every year and election is one of the major key to influence politics. In 2024 various major elections occurs for instance:- USA Presidential Election, India Parliament Election etc.

• Trump’s Come Back To The White House: Donald Trump made a big political comeback in 2024, winning another term as U.S. President after losing in 2020. He stayed in the spotlight through public events, social media, and his own media platform, energising his supporters with the slogan “Making America Great Again—Again.” His victory shows his lasting popularity among his base and highlights the divisions in American politics, with frustration over Biden’s policies playing a key role in his return.
• Modi 3.0: The year 2024 was historic for the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) as they came to power for the third straight time. Narendra Modi, a prominent figure in Indian politics, has emerged as a global leader with his smart strategies in recent years. From the Ram Mandir to development projects, he faced significant criticism from opposition parties but still managed to secure the public’s support for a third consecutive term.
• Bangladesh Political Turmoil: In 2024, Bangladesh faced political unrest and social challenges, marked by protests and clashes. Opposition parties demanded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and a neutral government for elections, leading to violent confrontations with law enforcement. As a result, PM Hasina fled away and gave her resignation and the superpower formed an interim government in Bangladesh. The alleged genocide of Bangladeshi Hindus in Bangladesh was shocking and the whole world and Western media were silent about innocent Hindus killing in Bangladesh.

2. Major Conflict Between Countries

Conflict or war is a destructive force between nations, impacting innocent lives and the entire world. This year, we witnessed significant loss of innocent lives due to wars that shook the global community. War not only affects the world economy but also deeply threatens humanity. For example, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Israel-Palestine war.

• Russia-Ukraine War: The Russia-Ukraine war, now in its second year, has deeply impacted global politics, economics, and humanitarian efforts. Ukraine, backed by Western aid, has reclaimed some territories, while Russia intensified attacks on cities and critical infrastructure, causing widespread blackouts and suffering. Millions have been displaced, and tensions between NATO and Russia have escalated, with sanctions straining Russia’s economy but also driving up global energy and food prices. Peace talks have made little progress, and shifting alliances are shaping new global power dynamics as the conflict continues.
• Israel- Palestine War: By early 2024, Israeli forces had severely damaged Gaza, destroying homes, farmland, schools, and cultural landmarks, and displacing nearly all of its 2.3 million residents. Over 100,000 Israelis were also displaced. The conflict escalated regionally, with Israel targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon, including the killing of its leader Hassan Nasrallah, and engaging directly with Iranian forces, heightening Middle East tensions.
• Afghanistan-Pakistan Tension: By the end of 2024, Afghan civilians suffered heavily, with many killed in intense airstrikes by the Pakistani army. The Taliban reported that the strikes claimed the lives of 46 civilians. In retaliation, the Afghan Taliban advanced toward the Pakistan border.

3. Major Accidents Happened in 2024

The year 2024 was marked by natural and man-made disasters that claimed numerous innocent lives. Some were so severe that they left no chance of survival. From landslides to road accidents, many lives were lost, and billions of dollars in economic losses were incurred. It was also a devastating year for the aviation sector, with major aeroplane crashes, such as the South Korean Airplane Crash and the Azerbaijan Plane Crash.

• Wayanad India Landslide Incident: On July 30, 2024, intense monsoon rains caused devastating landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district. The first landslide hit near the Punnappuzha River’s origin, affecting Punjirimattom and Mundakkai, while a second landslide in Chooralmala triggered flash floods, destroying the village. At least 123 people lost their lives, with many missing or injured. Rescue efforts faced challenges due to heavy rain, tough terrain, and damaged infrastructure, including a collapsed bridge isolating 400 families.
• Azerbaijan Plane Crash: On December 25, 2024, an Azerbaijan Airlines Flight crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, killing 38 of the 67 people on board. The plane, diverted due to bad weather, was reportedly shot down by Russian air defences during a Ukrainian drone attack. Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev confirmed the incident, demanded compensation, and accused Russia of electronic interference. President Putin offered condolences but denied responsibility.
• South Korean Plane Accident: On December 29, 2024, Jeju Air Flight 2216, a Boeing 737-800, crashed while approaching Muan International Airport in South Korea. The crash, caused by a bird strike that led to landing gear failure, claimed 179 lives out of 181 people on board. The plane hit a concrete barrier during an emergency landing, causing a deadly fireball. This is South Korea’s worst aviation disaster in decades and the deadliest worldwide in 2024.

4. Space Exploration

• Sunita Williams Stuck in Space: If there’s one story that kept us glued to updates, it was astronaut Sunita Williams being stuck on the International Space Station (ISS) due to a technical glitch. But here’s the thing: Sunita has shown us what it means to adapt and persevere. From conducting vital experiments to sharing heartfelt (and sometimes humorous) messages from space, she’s become a global symbol of resilience. The world is eagerly awaiting her safe return, rooting for her every single day.
• The Sun’s Close-Up: The Parker Solar Probe gave us the closest-ever look at the Sun, revealing mind-blowing details about solar winds and helping scientists predict space weather better. Yes, we’re officially one step closer to understanding our fiery neighbour.

However, it wasn’t all bad, here are some good things that happened in 2024:

4. Animals Making a Comeback

One of the most inspiring stories of 2024 was about animals that came back from the brink of extinction, thanks to decades of conservation efforts.

• Humpback Whales: From just 1,400 in 1960 to a whopping 135,000 in 2024.
• Mountain Gorillas: Once down to 250, their population now stands at 1,100.
• Giant Pandas: From 1,114 in 1980 to 1,864 today.
• Bengal Tigers: Their numbers rose from 1,000 to 3,500, roaring back stronger than ever.
• Bald Eagles: Soaring from 410 in the 1960s to 316,700 today.
• White Rhinos: From just 100 left in the wild to an impressive 18,000.
• Sea Otters: Their population skyrocketed from a mere 50 to an estimated 125,000.
• Sumatran Orangutans: From 11,000 to 14,000—a small but vital increase for this critically endangered species.

5. History Made in Women’s Sports

For the first time ever, the Women’s T20 World Cup was co-hosted alongside the Men’s T20 World Cup. This move wasn’t just about cricket; it was about giving women’s sports the global stage they deserve. Oh, and speaking of women’s sports, the U.S. women’s soccer team crushed it by winning their fifth FIFA Women’s World Cup title.

6. First Black Astronaut Candidate Makes It to Space After More Than 60 Years

In one of the most inspiring stories of the year, Ed Dwight, the first Black astronaut candidate from the 1960s, finally got to live his dream. At 90 years old, he boarded a Blue Origin flight and went to space. Proof that it’s never too late to make history.

7. Overdose Deaths and Youth Vaping Declined

Here’s some great news: overdose deaths in the U.S. dropped by 17%, and youth vaping hit its lowest level in a decade. Big wins for public health! It feels good to see positive change happening in areas that impact so many lives.

8. Bashar al-Assad’s Regime Fell in Syria

One of the year’s most shocking moments came when Bashar al-Assad’s regime collapsed in Syria. While the fall of his government ended years of oppression for many, the country’s future remains uncertain. Let’s hope 2025 brings stability and healing to the region.

A Little Something to Take Into 2025

2024 wasn’t perfect, no year ever is. But it reminded us to keep going, even when things get tough. Whether it’s celebrating small wins or picking ourselves up after setbacks, every moment is a step forward.

As we step into 2025, let’s remember: Life is a mix of highs and lows, but the magic happens when we choose to see the beauty in both.

You’ve heard it before—parents, grandparents, or random people on social media talking about how “back in their day,” life was tougher, people were stronger, and failure was a valuable life lesson, not something to be avoided like the plague. So, are we really becoming too soft, or is this just the circle of life repeating itself?

Before I get into it, know that this is a light-hearted exploration of a common generational stereotype. It’s important to remember that every generation has its unique challenges and strengths.

The Survival Instinct: Are We Losing It?

One common argument is that the new generation lacks the survival instinct that our ancestors relied on. Some argue it’s fading fast. There’s a growing sentiment that the competitive spirit is disappearing. Nowadays, in many areas, it seems like everyone’s a winner, no matter the outcome.

And while participation trophies feel nice at the moment, what happens when these kids step into the real world, where failure is a more frequent visitor than success?

Think about it—most entrepreneurs, athletes, and artists have one thing in common: failure. They lost at some point, but instead of shrinking back, they learned, grew, and succeeded. Michael Jordan didn’t become a basketball legend by winning every game.

He famously said, “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career… and that is why I succeed.” But what if young Jordan had been told, “Hey Mike, it’s okay, we’re all winners here. No need to push yourself”? Maybe the competitive fire would’ve been dimmed.

Nowadays, it seems like kids are being raised in a bubble. They’re encouraged to think that there’s no such thing as failure, that everyone gets a trophy, and that life is basically one big party. But the real world doesn’t work that way. You have to go through setbacks, disappointments, and even heartbreak to become a strong, successful person.

A world where failure doesn’t exist is a world where growth stagnates. We need to realize our own potential, but sometimes that potential is only unlocked by facing hard truths.

The Rise of Anxiety

It’s undeniable that anxiety rates have been rising among young people. Studies show that Gen Z reports higher levels of anxiety than any previous generation. Some argue that this is, in part, due to a lack of accountability and responsibility. No one wants to admit fault or own up to their mistakes because we’ve created a bubble where blame is avoided at all costs.

But some also point to a culture of coddling and overprotection as contributing factors. When young people aren’t allowed to make mistakes or face consequences, they may struggle to develop the resilience needed to cope with life’s challenges.

Rules of Life Aren’t the Rules of Society

Here’s a wild thought: does the average person today understand why humanity exists, how the universe works, or what life is really about? It sounds like a deep, philosophical question (and it is), but it’s also a reflection on how disconnected we’ve become from the fundamentals of life.

We’re more plugged into our screens than we are to reality. The rules of social and political structures shape much of our world, but life’s deeper truths—like the importance of failure, responsibility, and self-discipline—seem to get lost in the shuffle.

And speaking of screens…

Real Life, What’s That?

A lot of today’s generation has spent most of their lives behind a computer screen, with many of their experiences happening through a monitor rather than in real life. Their friendships are virtual, their problems are solved via Google or Artificial Intelligence, and their entertainment is streamed. Real-life experiences? Those are becoming rarer than finding an honest politician.

While technology is amazing (let’s not forget how it’s revolutionized everything from communication to medicine), it’s also made it easy to avoid real-world challenges. Why take a risk and put yourself out there when you can just “like” someone’s Instagram post instead of actually talking to them in person?

Everything, All the Time

We live in a time where desires are celebrated—no matter what they are. It’s all about indulgence, gratification, and doing what feels good. But that’s not a path to happiness. As humans, we need temperance. Life isn’t just about satisfying every whim that comes our way. If anything, overindulging can lead to unhappiness and weakness. True happiness comes from self-mastery, from learning to control desires, not letting them control us.

Every Generation Thinks the Next Is Soft

Now, before we get too carried away, let’s take a step back. Every generation calls the next generation soft—it’s practically a rite of passage! We’ve been saying this for millennia. Sure, each generation becomes “softer” than the last, but isn’t that kind of the point of civilization?

We’re constantly improving living conditions, inventing new conveniences, and making life a bit more comfortable. Would anyone really want to go back to a time without air conditioning or Wi-Fi? Didn’t think so.

At the same time, while comfort is great, we shouldn’t completely idolize the present and forget that toughness, discipline, and resilience still have their place in shaping well-rounded humans.

The Golden Era of Intelligence

Despite all the criticisms, here’s a silver lining: we are living in an era of incredible intelligence and creativity. Statistically, we are advancing at a rate never seen before. The new generation is smarter, more informed, and more connected to global issues than any generation before them. They’re the ones who will carry this torch forward, and they’ll find their own ways of doing so.

So, are they soft? Maybe in some ways, sure. But softness isn’t necessarily bad—it’s just different. Every generation faces its own unique challenges, and while we can debate the merits of coddling or competition, the truth is that each generation finds its balance in the end.

They are things which are hard to find in society anymore; They did it to help others, they did it not for money, or recognition. In fact, if someone else didn’t write their story we would never even hear about them because that’s what makes them “Unsung Heroes.”

A Simple Man

If you read Aspiring Blogs stories, you have read about “The Unseen Contributions of Slum Dwellers to Urban Life” and many more can be found on their blog or in the book ”Unfold the Stories of Unsung Heroes.”

But I’m going to tell you about a simple hardworking man who came from a line of simple hard-working men. This man is my grandfather, James Lewis Stanley. He was a pig farmer in Woodville, Tennessee during the “Great Depression 1929-1939.”

A few of these stories were local legends told to me by my aunts and uncles. Others were told to me by James Lewis himself “Papaw” we all called him. Granny was the only one who called him by name, James or “JAMES LEWIS!!” when she was mad. I picked many stories out of him while on catfishing trips. Papaw was the greatest fisherman I ever met, and I’ve met many, but I digress.

Money Is Not Always Green

There was no money during the Depression, and I mean none in rural areas like Woodville. In the big cities, people were jumping out of skyscraper windows or finding other ways to end their lives. They were just not able to live a life without money.

Back in Brownsville, my grandfather “Papaw “took stock of what he had. He had about 50 hogs including 4 boars and the rest sows. In addition, he had a few dozen hoglets. The pigs were seen as a burden (at first) because he could no longer sell them, and he couldn’t buy feed. He also had two milk cows, one mule, and the usual household brood of chickens.

Their basement shelves were lined with canned goods from the garden, so they were fixed quite well. There were very few cows in the county other than dairy cows. At the time they were too expensive to buy and keep up. Pigs could survive in the wild with or without help, but fed and managed pigs were preferred to eat and a must to sell.

Rosco Smith

The farm behind the Stanley farm was owned by Rosco Smith. Rosco grew 80 acres of corn and 80 acres of cotton. He rotated the crops each year. When The Great Depression came Papaw went to him with the plan of using Rosco’s corn as pig feed instead of making moonshine with it.

Rosco’s moonshine was prized throughout Woodville and Haywood County. If Rosco would agree, the pigs could be fed, and in return, Papaw could supply everyone in Woodville and beyond with meat. But sadly, Rosco would have none of it and Rosco gathered support from the other farmers who did not want to give up their supply of moonshine whisky.

Well, it soon turned out nobody had any money to pay Rosco for his whisky anymore. It also turned out that Papaw had co-signed the loan for Rosco to buy the 160 acres. Rosco couldn’t sell his moonshine so he couldn’t keep up his payments. As co-signer, Papaw was forced by the bank to take over Rosco’s farm. Fighting ensued between Papaw and Rosco when he refused to leave the farm.

My grandmother (Granny) “Sally” told me that every day Papaw would come home beaten up and bloody as Rosco was a very big man.

Slingshot Gunslinger

Papaw was known to be the best shot in the county with his slingshot, simply made from a “Y” shaped hickory tree branch and strips of rubber from an old tire tube. At least ten relatives told me that he could throw a rock into the air and hit it every time with his slingshot.

He could even do it in the dark. You could see the spark fly when he hit it in the dark. When I asked him if this was true, he smiled and simply said “Well, I didn’t miss very often.”

Early one morning Rosco walked to the edge of his porch to pee, a common practice living on a farm. From the brush nearby the rubber on a slingshot stretched to the maximum and a rock traveled at the speed of sound, then connected with the exposed part of Rosco. As he screamed in pain, falling off the porch, Papaw silently slipped back home giggling all the way.

From that time on, wherever Rosco went, he was never sure when a rock might smash the side of his face, the back of his head, or God forbid he try to pee in public. Two stories were told to me about what happened to Rosco. He was fishing off the bridge at Forked Deer River and he fell off the bridge.

The other was that Rosco simply decided to leave and go to Memphis, but for some reason, he left his wife behind. “Mary” became a friend of the Stanley family and remained on the Rosco farm behind Papaws.

Her shadowy figure is seen on the porch in our family photo taken in the early 1900s (before the Depression) but not long before the time of the Spanish Flu epidemic that took the lives of many of my family, others in Woodville, and many parts of the world.

Startup Organization

So, “Papaw’s” plan began. He got together with the farmers and agreed to feed and keep his pigs fat, healthy, and producing piglets. He would supply Woodville and much of Haywood County with all the meat he could produce for as long as it took.

The banker accepted one grown hog per month as the payment on Rosco’s former farm. Papaw also helped designate farms for certain vegetables based on the soil and sunlight. (The area is now famous for its vine-ripened tomatoes).

At the age of 8, I visited one of the sorghum molasses farms and sampled some of the sweet nectar by dipping in with a piece of straw. As we say nowadays, OMG!! it’s good. At the time, the canes were crushed using a mule that walked in a circle, harnessed to a wood pole, turning a big round rock. Other farms grew cotton, and the women spun it making clothes for everyone.

What Is a Blue Mule?

Horses were good but mules were worth their weight in gold, and mules weigh a lot! So of course, there was a mule rancher. He already had the market cornered before the depression, but mules were even more important now. It took a lot of veggies to trade for a mule.

Papaw would do his chores before sunrise then hitch “Blue” the mule up to the wagon and begin distributing salted down hams, shoulders, ribs, bacon, sausage, pig feet, ears, tongue, tail, organ meat, and even intestines to make chitlins. And don’t forget “Hog head cheese.”

They say every part of a pig is used but the squeal. I have eaten it all but in my elder years, I have been vegan for four of those years. So, what is a Blue Mule?

Well, mules 99.9% don’t reproduce. They are basically a donkey bred with a horse. The old saying “once in a blue moon” comes from the first known mule born from another mule which happened during a blue moon.

Self-Reliance And No Hunger

There were many widows, usually with children during this period. It was after WWI and the Spanish Flu had taken its toll. Widows had no money and usually children to feed, but it mattered not. Nobody had any money and Papaw kept them all in meat. Others kept them in veggies.

I am not going to be able to tell all the interesting stories in one article. It would be too long for a blog post. Maybe I’ll write another blog post about his exploits. So, let me leave you with this, Papaw lived with us for the last two years of his life and I heard many more stories.

Each time he would talk about his pigs, his eyes would get watery and so did mine as they are now. I’m sure most of you have unsung heroes in your family, no matter how large or small, why not tell their story?
