This past week, I had one of those incredible “firsts” that completely shifted my perspective. I went paragliding! And not just anywhere – it was from the Bir Billing in Himachal Pradesh, India, which they claim is the world’s second-highest paragliding point. No big deal, right? Except…well, I’ve never paraglider before in my life.
First, they took me to the mountain peak around some 8100 feet above. And then as I stood there, just before the takeoff, my instructor told me to run towards the edge of the mountain with every force I had. I was seeing the deepest cliff in front of me I’ve ever seen with my eyes. There were only mountains and alpine trees all around me.
My whole body was surrounded by a lot of ‘What If’ scenarios. Again & again I was asking myself – “Am I really ready for this?”
But the second I launched myself off that cliff, it all melted away. All that was left was the appreciation and realization of how big & precious the world really is.
Soaring above the Himalayas, the snow-capped peaks beside me, it was like the world opened up in a way I never imagined. I see the horizons and the universe much closer to me. Everything suddenly felt simpler, smaller worries just faded away. It was like I had unlocked a whole new dimension of joy, the kind that can only be found in those first-time experiences.
After I returned home, it got me thinking –
Why do first-time experiences matter so much?
Well, this isn’t just about paragliding, though that was pretty epic. First-time experiences matter because they push us outside our comfort zones. They remind us that fear can be a big, fat liar, and sometimes you gotta grab life by the horns and just go for it.
Remember that first hike you took, even though your legs screamed? That feeling of accomplishment after reaching the peak? The first time you get that 1 like on your blog? That’s the magic of firsts. Because the funny thing is – the most incredible things in life happen just beyond the edge of what we think we’re capable of.
To be honest, I remember the fear when I hiked for the first time in the mountains. I still sometimes hesitate for a second before tackling a new mountain. But you know what? If the opportunity presents itself, I’ll even go for higher mountains, higher paragliding points, higher skydiving, higher bungee jumping, and eventually higher me.
And while I might not have all the time in the world, every first-time experience is a chance to grow, to learn, and to feel truly alive. I wanna feel this world, this universe.
Next time you get that chance to try something new, something a little scary, take a deep breath and just go for it. You might surprise yourself with what you can achieve, and how much bigger the world feels when you see it from a new perspective.
After all, life’s a journey, and the best journeys are filled with amazing first times!

Been there … Done that Ritish … but in Alaska . . . want to do it again☺️ A ‘First time’ adrenaline rush on steroids!
April 6, 2024 at 12:38 pm
Haha, no way. Alaska paragliding sounds EPIC! 😲Double the adrenaline rush, I bet. Maybe that’ll be my next “first time” challenge – gotta up the stakes! Glad you loved it.

What a brave jump! I am a fan of the familiar — and often see other people’s quests to do new things and check items off a bucket list of experiences as somewhat selfish and misguided (especially the items that include using lots of fossil fuels considering that the overall balance of life on planet earth is teetering towards a fossil-fuel-driven collapse of wildfires, hurricanes, floods, mudslides, etc. these days…) But I agree that “fear can be a big, fat liar” and doing new things can bring a sense of wonder and accomplishment (and maybe even satisfaction) into our lives. Thank you for writing and sharing this post!

It’s definitely true that some first-time experiences have a bigger environmental impact than others. But I also believe there’s a balance to be struck. New experiences can open our eyes to the beauty and fragility of the planet, which can inspire us to protect it.
Thanks for your thoughtful comment!

Oh my goodness – this is so exhilarating, Ritish! Amazing! I love, “the most incredible things in life happen just beyond the edge of what we think we’re capable of.” Yes, yes, yes! Thank you for the lovely inspiration!

Thank you Wynne! Paragliding was definitely an “edge of what I thought I could do” experience. 😊😃
April 5, 2024 at 7:54 pm
Wow!!! Way more brave than me!
April 6, 2024 at 12:41 pm
It was definitely scary at first, but the view was worth it. Paragliding isn’t for everyone, but maybe there’s another first-time adventure out there waiting for you.
(Would love to know your name)

Thank you, Ritish, for describing so eloquently your new experience of paragliding in the Himalayas, and the surreal feeling of being free as a bird, and the happiness it brought of seeing the seemingly, the top of the world! Next step, Ritish, has to be walking on the Moon!

Beautiful…🌞 What a fantastic experience you had!!
I agree, taking risks is what living is all about! I can’t do a lot because of my physical limitations, but I push myself all the time past my limits, just to see what those limits are.
I have experienced quite a few “first times” in the past couple of years as I too have come to see that “Fear, he is a liar”.
April 6, 2024 at 8:15 pm
Love your spirit ❤️It just goes to show that amazing “first times” can come in all shapes and sizes. Would you be willing to share one of your recent “first times”? I’d love to celebrate your victories with you!

Wow, that’s a truly awesome experience! Doing things like that definitely can help us see ourselves in a new light, even give us the courage to tackle something else in our lives we may have bee postponing or dreading. Good for you!
April 6, 2024 at 8:18 pm
Thank you so much, Tamara. Conquering that fear made me realize I’m capable of more than I think.
So glad you enjoyed the blog! 😊

Dude this takes some serious guts! Next time I’m feeling stuck in a rut, I’m definitely gonna remember your post and push myself outside my comfort zone.
April 6, 2024 at 8:21 pm
Haha thanks, It did take a little guts. Wishing you the best (victory) for whatever you do. Just remember – Every push expands your world.

An great experience I envy, Ritish! When I was younger, I once wanted to glide above the sand dunes at Kitty Hawk Beach, but I allowed my friend to talk me out of it. I have few regrets in my life, but I guess that is one. I don’t believe in living in fear! 🦅
April 6, 2024 at 8:24 pm
Totally feel the regret, Cheryl. But hey, never say never! Maybe one day you’ll conquer those dunes. It’s never too late for an epic adventure.
Thanking for sharing your thoughts 😃
April 7, 2024 at 5:04 pm
Wow, what an amazing experience, and I hope you enjoy many more 🙂
April 7, 2024 at 6:51 pm

Thanks Pooja 😀

My pleasure 😊
April 9, 2024 at 5:23 pm
How exciting!
I never did this, but I jumped off a 100 foot bridge. It was scary because unlike jumping into a pool I was in the air a bit too long, then once underwater, it took forever to come up. THEN I had to fight a current swimming back. I was going nowhere and someone came out to rescue me.
April 9, 2024 at 5:42 pm
Wow, that sounds intense! Jumping off a 100 feet is no joke 😲. Glad you made it back safe and sound. Here’s to many more ‘safe’ adventures.
April 11, 2024 at 11:04 am
I totally get the fear you must have felt. Next month I’m actually trying highlining near the French Alps! Ever heard of it? It’s basically slacklining between mountains…at crazy heights. Wish me luck! 😃
April 11, 2024 at 9:40 pm
That’s amazing. Ive never heard of it but it sounds epic. Good luck 😀
April 14, 2024 at 5:50 pm
Love that. Fear is a big fat liar! How cool you had such a magical experience.
Trying new things is always the paramount for keep open and fresh. I’ve found my body saying no more noticing certain limitations… but I’m working on it! 🩷
April 15, 2024 at 4:52 pm
Love your spirit, Cindy ❤️ Fear is definitely a big, fat liar. New things keep us young. So keep pushing those boundaries.
August 5, 2024 at 3:09 am
Wow, I can’t even imagine. The scenery at that height and in that area must have been so incredibly breathtaking. I admire that you took the leap, I was disappointed I could not view the center pictures for some reason. I tried a couple of things but I can imagine just how beautiful it was. You were very brave to go for it and I am sure you will remember it for the rest of your life. I agree we have to go for things that we are often afraid of and one big reason to do so is to not have regrets that we did not try new things. Many blessings 🥰
August 5, 2024 at 4:28 pm
Absolutely, the Himalayas are truly a sight to behold, and paragliding over them was an experience of a lifetime. I’m really sorry about the pictures! Maybe try opening it in the browser. (But FYR, I was having one heck of a time in those pictures, you can see snow-capped mountains behind me 😅😅) I’m glad you agree about taking chances and stepping outside your comfort zone. It’s definitely something I’m passionate about.

I believe you reach for the stars – keep reaching my friend. I was on my computer. I always use chrome and read post on my computer. I bet it was stunning. I even cut my VPN off. I think it is wonderful what you are doing. No one can ever take those experiences away from you. Blessings to you my friend. ❤️🤗
